The Medical Assistant 1 assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Interviews patients, obtains vital signs (e.g., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height), and records information on patients' charts. May serve as a preceptor for clinical staff and may be required to draw and collect blood samples for laboratory analysis. Coordinates patient flow, schedules appointments, procedures, tests, and referrals. May triage phone calls, call-in non-narcotic prescriptions as per provider’s direction, and communicate frequently with patients and their families. Works under close supervision of the physician and clinic manager.

  1. Patient Care
    • Properly identifies patients by requesting name and DOB prior to interactions.
    • Ensures confidentiality of protected health information in compliance with HIPAA.
    • Completes and documents patient visit notes accurately, including chief complaint, medical history, vitals, allergies, medications, and wellness issues.
    • Administers and documents waived testing under physician supervision.
    • Prepares, stocks, and cleans exam rooms, maintaining supplies and equipment.
    • Prepares and administers medications per physician orders.
    • Assists with minor surgical procedures and handles specimens and cultures properly.
    • Provides basic clinical care for all age groups as per skills checklist.
  2. Coordination of Care
    • Manages patient flow and scheduling to optimize physician efficiency.
    • Instructs patients and families on procedures, medications, and health issues using approved materials.
    • Handles patient information transfer in accordance with HIPAA.
    • Communicates test results and treatment changes within 48 hours.
    • Calls prescriptions to pharmacies as ordered.
    • Coordinates diagnostic testing and communicates with healthcare providers.
    • Responds appropriately to patient and family questions and concerns.
  3. Quality and Safety
    • Adheres to compliance, accreditation, and ethical standards.
    • Understands chemical hazards and accesses MSDS information.
    • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and maintains safety standards.
    • Uses resources efficiently and commits to ongoing professional development.
  4. Other Duties
    • Assists in clerical tasks such as answering phones, filing, and managing referrals.
    • Supports community and organizational events like flu clinics and health fairs.

Experience: Completion of a medical assistant program or 1 year of clinical experience.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Skills: Computer literacy, including Microsoft Outlook and electronic health records.

BLS certification required.
