Job summary

Universal Health Services in Chicago seeks a Registered Nurse to oversee RN-to-RN screenings and coordinate admission processes for psychiatric services. You will review H&P, labs and other documentation to determine medical appropriateness for admission and provide medical clearance as needed.

Responsibilities include communicating with physicians, triaging admissions, documenting the admission process, and coordinating transfers for higher levels of care.

Qualifications

• Education: Associates Degree or BSN in Nursing from an accredited nursing program is required.
• Experience: 1+ year in inpatient mental health preferred, with strong med-surg nursing background.
• Licensure/Certification: IL Registered Nurse licensure or higher.

Responsibilities

1. Focuses primarily on RN-to-RN screenings, (i.e. reviewing H&P, labs, and other clinical documentations) for all admissions and ensures patients are medically appropriate for admission.
2. Responds to inquiry calls regarding services.
3. Oversees the admission process including the appropriateness of the admission, completion RN to RN screenings, orders for the admissions, and any additional required paperwork.
4. Assists in assigning unit/program based on patient needs.
5. Knowledgeable and able to explain Hospital programs and services.
6. Provides accurate and complete information to physicians regarding RN-to-RN screening.
7. Communicates with physicians and providers to receive admission orders and medical clearance as needed.
8. Assures compliance with all applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations that pertain to psychiatric admissions.
9. Maintains data/records regarding the admission process for medical screenings.
10. Completes medical screening evaluations and triaging on all patients who present for an assessment in accordance with EMTALA laws.
11. Provides first aid and medical care as needed.
12. Coordinate transfer of those patients requiring a higher level of medical care and/or medical clearance.
13. Has a strong understanding of the department computer systems.
14. Conducts the initial assessment which includes prior treatment history, previous medications, health screen, family dynamics and risk factors.

Experience: 1+ year(s) experience working within an inpatient mental health field preferred, and strong prior experience with med-surg nursing and/or providing medical clearance for patients. Knowledgeable of basic growth and development across the life span to properly screen patients.

Licensure/Certification: IL Registered Nurse licensure or higher

Supervision Received: Directors of Emergency Services and Nursing, Assistant Director, Lead Clinician and/or Supervisor

Supervision Exercised: None

Line of Promotion: Lead Admission Nurse and/or Director of Emergency Services

Working Conditions: Works in the Emergency Services Department, the inpatient units and other areas of the Hospital. Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste. General hospital environment.

Physical Requirements: Ability to proficiently communicate verbally and in writing. Physical agility to manage patients. Push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds. Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching and stooping.
