We are seeking a professional Fleet Technician I to support SWMP operations. This position provides skilled mechanical work in inspection, maintenance, and repair on refuse equipment and general automotive vehicles and equipment.
Position will be assigned to work at the Newington Collections Facility; however, the incumbent will be required to travel to and from sites, offsite meetings, training and or conferences. Incumbent must possess their own personal tools. Incumbent will receive a $500 yearly tool allowance.
Responsibilities:- Perform journey level skilled work on refuse equipment including Rear Packer, Side Loader, Roll Off and Crane.
- Perform general automotive vehicle and leaf vac equipment maintenance.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance, major and minor mechanical repairs and diagnosis (routine) on all refuse and industrial equipment.
- Perform facility maintenance.
- Test drive vehicles to aid in diagnosing repair problems.
- Perform road service calls to repair disabled vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”)completion of the tenth grade plus two years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a set of hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:- Valid driver's license.
- Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B".
- DOT Medical Card.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, driving record check, and commercial driver's license screening to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Three to five years of commercial experience.
- MAC certified (up to 12 months to obtain certification).
- Possession of ASE certifications.
- General knowledge of hydraulics.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to access tight spaces by crawling, reaching and stooping. Ability to drive light, medium and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. without assistance and 25 to 50 lbs. with or without assistance. Ability to stand, walk, sit, kneel, climb, bend, crouch, stoop, lift, reach, stretch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for lengthy periods of time. Ability to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures. Manual strength and dexterity required to work on vehicles, and carry and handle tools, equipment and materials. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Work requires performing tasks in an environment in which raw waste is present. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:Panel interview and may include exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
