Job summary

The Berkeley Unified School District is seeking a skilled heavy vehicle mechanic to maintain and repair a diverse fleet of buses and district vehicles. You will diagnose electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Experience with electric and hybrid buses, high-voltage systems, and CA CDL endorsements is essential.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent with specialized training in repair and maintenance.
• 4+ years of verifiable journey-level automotive or diesel maintenance experience.
• Valid CA Class A/B CDL with appropriate endorsements and a medical certificate.
• Journeyman certificate and AC609 certification or ability to obtain.
• HD I/M (Smog) tester certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform journey-level mechanical work inspecting, repairing and maintaining buses and fleet equipment including gasoline, diesel and CNG.
• Evaluate maintenance needs and diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance, safety checks and inspections of district buses.
• Inspect and repair electric and hybrid vehicles and high-voltage systems with proper safety gear.
• Prepare vehicles for smog inspections and maintain repair records.
• Communicate with operators and staff regarding records and maintenance schedules.
• Adhere to FMVSS and California regulations for school bus maintenance.
