Job summary

The Abilene Zoological Gardens seeks a skilled maintenance technician to perform routine mechanical tasks on a variety of vehicles and equipment. You will service tires, lubrication, and fuel systems, while maintaining accurate records and inventory in a City fleet environment.

Maintains safety standards, operates service vehicles, and supports field calls for repairs. A valid Texas license and relevant certificates are required, with opportunities to advance within the fleet operations team.

Qualifications

  • General mechanical experience using hand and power tools safely.
  • Reading and writing at a level necessary for job performance.
  • Experience in fast-paced industrial environments preferred.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s license or ability to obtain within 90 days; Class C UST Facility Operator certificate required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance: tires, lube/oil/filter services on municipal equipment.
  • Maintain lubrication records and inventory; issue equipment and fuel/oil checkout.
  • Respond to field calls for tire service, fueling, and repairs; operate service trucks as needed.
  • Adhere to safety policies and wear PPE; assist in maintaining fuel tanks and pumps.

General Description

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of routine mechanical tasks involved in the basic maintenance of mobile and stationary equipment, including tires and fluid service for various types of vehicles and equipment. This position may be responsible for maintaining inventory of items including tires, filters, oil, and the delivery of all types of fuel.

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of routine mechanical tasks involved in the basic maintenance of mobile and stationary equipment, including tires and fluid service for various types of vehicles and equipment. This position may be responsible for maintaining inventory of items including tires, filters, oil, and the delivery of all types of fuel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position exercises no supervision.

Important And Essential Duties

Perform routine, light maintenance such as repair and replacement of tires and wheels; lube/oil/ filter services for City-operated mobile equipment and their components, which may include automobiles, tractors, small and large diesel trucks, earthmoving equipment, or pavement construction equipment; inspecting and servicing a variety of small gasoline engines and pumps.

Maintain lubrication records on all equipment. Order replacement parts and materials as needed; issue equipment or perform fuel and oil checkout; maintain accurate inventory records.

Respond as appropriate to calls in the field such as operating a tire service truck to repair flats; boosting equipment using special equipped trucks; providing fueling and fluid services using mobile service units.

Operates a motor vehicle on public roads as permitted by a Class C Driver’s License.

Operate larger equipment and vehicles within the maintenance yard.

Clean and maintain the work area.

Depending upon the work site, will assist customers in operating computerized fuel and oil dispensing systems; wash and vacuum vehicles; and/or answer telephone and or radio dispatch work.

Maintenance of fuel valves under pavement.

Inspect and report to the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor any condition or non-compliance issues of Fleet’s fuel tanks and pumps.

Handle waste oil and operate the oil filter crusher

Tools, equipment and procedures used in the maintenance of various sizes and types of vehicles and municipal equipment; hand and power tools; mobile equipment and their components; and/or various sizes and types of tires.

Recordkeeping, inventory, and purchasing procedures.

Safety practices and procedures used in equipment maintenance and tire repair.

Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Perform preventive maintenance tasks efficiently and effectively.

Conduct basic inspections and identify potential safety hazards related to fleet vehicles and fuel systems.

Adhere to safety policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure a secure working environment.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience And Training Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience

General mechanical experience in using hand and power tools safely is required.

Education/Training

Experience working in a fast-paced industrial environment is preferred.

Formal or informal education or training, which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is required.

License Or Certificate

A valid Texas Driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days, or a military waiver is required.

Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date, a Class C UST Facility Operator Certificate is required.

Special Requirements

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

Bloodborne Pathogens training and HazCom training are required within sixty (60) days of employment.

Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.

Ability to travel to different work sites.
