Job summary

The City of Sarasota currently seeks a skilled automotive and heavy equipment mechanic to diagnose, repair and maintain a fleet of specialized vehicles.

You will perform preventive maintenance, repair engines, driveline and electrical systems, install equipment, and respond to emergency repairs in field or shop settings, with safety and quality as priorities. A strong background in diesel/gas engines, hydraulics, and heavy equipment is required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, or vocational/technical training in diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Five years of experience as automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Ability to possess and maintain a valid Class “B” or higher Florida CDL within six months of employment.
  • A.S.E. Master Certification as a Master Automobile Technician and/or Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician.
  • Basic computer skills to use computerized fleet maintenance software.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all preventative maintenance inspections and services.
  • Repairs ignition, carbureted and fuel injected systems.
  • Repairs and overhauls driveline components.
  • Repairs generators, starters, lighting and electrical systems, wheel bearings, hydraulic and brakes systems.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects in automobiles, medium/heavy trucks, and other equipment.
  • Installs specialized equipment.
  • M akes emergency in-field repairs out of the shop.
  • Diagnoses defects through testing and operation of various equipment.
