Job summary

Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District is seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to repair and maintain automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other district vehicles. You will document work orders, labor hours, parts, and vehicle issues using the CMMS and perform field calls as needed.

Experience in diagnosing engine, drivability, electrical, and hydraulic systems is required, along with a valid driver’s license and CDL preferred.

Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other Sewer District-owned motorized equipment and vehicles. Keeps a well-documented process of work orders, labor hours, part orders, vehicle issues, and other general maintenance and repair information using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Interfaces with key vendors, customers, drivers, and other personnel throughout the Sewer District to gather information and keep up-to-date records. Makes field repair calls to troubleshoot, tow and/or recover stranded vehicles. Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs preventative maintenance, diagnoses and troubleshoots failures and makes necessary repairs of Sewer District motorized equipment including but not limited to automobiles, light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, heavy equipment, lawn care, watercraft, and off-road utility vehicles. Performs light bodywork, welding, and fabrication. Evaluates and resolves engine performance and vehicle drivability issues. Safely conducts necessary work in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and Sewer District policies.
  • Contacts and works with internal and external stakeholders, vendors such as dealerships, parts stores, the stockroom, to purchase, exchange, pick up and deliver vehicle parts. Actively follows up with key stakeholders (internal and external) promptly in regard to issues with vehicles or parts.
  • Makes field/roadside repair calls, including in inclement weather. Operates a Sewer District towing equipment to pick up stranded Sewer District vehicles and transport inoperable vehicles to the appropriate garage for maintenance or repairs.
  • Inspects, repairs, and/or overhauls vehicle support systems, such as Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Body Control Module (BCM), Restraint Control Module (RCM), Transmission Control Module (TCM), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), electrical, air, suspension, hydraulics, HVAC and anti-lock brake systems (ABS). Ensures all safety devices on vehicles are in good working condition.
  • Utilizes a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and associated hardware and software. Maintains current vehicle records, documenting the maintenance and repair process, work orders, part orders, labor hours, vehicle issues, daily checklist (pre-trip inspection), and other related information.
  • Performs routine housekeeping duties related to tools, materials, shop, and work areas.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

  • Candidate must possess a high school diploma or it’s GED Equivalent.
  • Candidate must possess a degree or certificate from an automotive trade school or related mechanic trade school. (2 years of additional experience can be substituted for this requirement)

EXPERIENCE

Candidate must possess five (5) years of experience in maintaining and repairing automotive and/or diesel equipment as a primary trade capacity in a professional fleet shop, dealership, or similar environment. Experience must include, but is not limited to, light, medium, and heavy-duty engines, drive trains, suspensions, steering, electrical 12/24-volt, drivability diagnostics, and minor auto and truck body repair. Working knowledge of diagnosis and repairs of off-road utility vehicles, generators, pumps, forklifts, construction equipment, etc. is required. At least two (2) years of experience must be recent work-related experience to include familiarity of the latest technologies in automotive vehicles.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving record in accordance with the Sewer District’s acceptable guidelines.
  • Candidate must possess a Class “A” CDL with a tank endorsement “N” prior to completion of the probationary period. The CDL license must be without restrictions “E, L, or Z” related to air brakes and manual transmission.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Candidate must possess knowledge in structural, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems as well as Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). Knowledge of transmission maintenance and repair, on board computer reflash, and programming of various electronic modules is preferred but not required.
  • Candidate must possess experience working with related hand tools and be able to perform basic gas and arc cutting and welding effectively.
  • Candidate must possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Candidate must be reliable and punctual in reporting to work as scheduled.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

During the course of performing the essential functions of this position, the employee must be able to compare, compute, analyze, synthesize, copy, compile, coordinate and instruct. Ability to communicate while exhibiting strong interpersonal skills is required. Physical work will need to be performed, such as standing, sitting, balancing, kneeling, crawling, handling, feeling, hearing, walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, fingering, and talking. Must be able to lift more than 100 lbs., at times. Position will require visual demands of near and far acuity, depth perception, and color vision. Noise exposure for this position may be very loud on occasion. While performing the duties of the position, the employee must be able to spend up to 80% of time in the field and may experience exposure to extreme weather, atmospheric conditions, vibrations, extreme heat, hazards, confined spaces, and wet and/or humid conditions wearing required personal protective equipment. The employee must possess the ability to wear required respiratory protection devices in accordance with the Sewer District’s policy, including not having facial hair that interferes with the facepiece-to-face seal.
