Job summary

Housing Works is seeking a Fleet Operations Manager in Long Island City, NY. You will direct daily moving, salvage, and Call Center operations, optimizing truck routing, scheduling, and coordination with donors and shop teams.

Lead, train, and develop staff to meet performance and service standards while ensuring safety and compliance. You will identify revenue opportunities, manage vendor relations, and monitor data to drive efficiency and growth.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; customer service oriented.

Responsibilities

  • Confirm inbound donation leads into profitable pickups and coordinate with warehouse and shop.
  • Implement systems for operational efficiency, accountability, and data tracking.
  • Develop and maintain space utilization and staging areas to ensure efficient workflow and timely movement of donations and inventory.
  • Oversee fleet maintenance, equipment readiness, and safety compliance.
  • Identify opportunities to maximize salvage revenue and drive sustainable growth.
  • Partner with vendors for salvage goals, scheduling, and logistics needs.
  • Monitor operational data to drive improvements in performance and productivity.
  • Maintain strong relationships with thrift leadership and external partners.
  • Participate in Housing Works advocacy efforts supporting the mission to end homelessness and HIV/AIDS.
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training staff; develop training tools.

Compensation Range: $29/hr - $31.70/hr commensurate with experience

Benefits:

Overview:

The Fleet Operations Manager is responsible for managing daily moving, salvage, and Call Center operations while driving sustainable salvage revenue growth. This role ensures operational leadership, including truck routing, scheduling, and frontline Call Center for coordination.

Responsibilities:

Primary:

  • Manage the daily operations of the Moving Department and Call Center for logistics, including truck routing, scheduling, and donor follow-up & shop communication.
  • Supervise, train, and develop movers and operational staff, ensuring high performance, accountability, and customer service standards.
  • Confirm inbound donation leads (phone and web) into profitable pickups.
  • Implement and maintain systems for operational efficiency, accountability, and data tracking.
  • Develop and maintain systems for warehouse space utilization, including intake, storage, and outbound staging areas, to ensure efficient workflow, maximize capacity, and support timely movement of donations and inventory
  • Oversee fleet maintenance, equipment readiness, and compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Identify opportunities to maximize salvage revenue and execute plans for sustainable growth.
  • Partner with vendors to support salvage goals, scheduling, and logistics needs.
  • Monitor and analyze operational data; use insights to improve performance and productivity.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with thrift leadership and external partners.
  • Participate in Housing Works advocacy efforts supporting the mission to end homelessness and HIV/AIDS.

Secondary:

  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training staff; develop structured training tools and programs.
  • Conduct system audits and operational reviews to identify gaps and implement improvements.
  • Coordinate moving support for Thrift Shop events and agency needs.
  • Reconcile vendor invoices, payments, and service agreements.
  • KPI’s:
    • Meet or exceed salvage revenue goals
    • Meet or exceed furniture unit goals
    • Compliance to overtime budget

Other functions that may be required with this position include:

  • Participate in marketing and sales related meetings
  • Source and manage temporary and freelance support as needed
  • Compliance with agency trainings

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED, some college preferred
  • Valid New York State driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to operate trucks and provide coverage when needed.
  • OSHA certification preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Flexibility in schedule; weekends and holidays may be required; may be required to work over 40 hours a week as necessary with prior approval from Director of Processing, Moving & Salvage or VP of Thrift Retail. Non-exempt employees are paid overtime at the rate of 1.5 times their hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a given work week. It is required that prior to working overtime, all non-exempt employees must have written authorization from the Director of Processing
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, kneel, and bend for long periods of time
  • Frequently required to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.
  • Frequently communicates (exchanges information, converse with, express oneself) with subordinates, vendors, supervisors, and community at large
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, articulations and instruction of policy and procedure.
  • Coach staff in accordance with organizational policy and best practices.
  • Occasionally exchange information in communication with individuals who are agitated, confrontational or difficult patrons from a variety of socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds
  • Occasionally required to traverse public transportation to attend meetings and/or participate in presentations and training seminars
