Job Responsibilities

- Maintains repairs, and or rebuilds of all the vehicles and equipment serviced by the Public Works Department for Gilmer County Government.
- Performs welding operations.
- Fabricates parts not available commercially.
- Changes filters, lubricates, and changes fluids on vehicles and equipment.
- Performs equipment maintenance and safety checks associated with vehicles and equipment.
- Responds to emergencies and weather events requiring road maintenance relating to Public Works.
- Maintains supply inventory regarding hand tools for proper repair and maintenance of vehicles and construction equipment.
- Operates, but not limited to; shear, roll, ironworker press brake, drill press, band saw, used for cutting, bending, drilling, shaping, rolling, and punching
- Utilizes handheld tools such as a hand-held screw gun, drill gun, and grinders
- Operates calipers, weld gauges, tape measures, and other welding hand tools
- Maintains weld machines using preventative maintenance methods
- Reads, interprets, and follows blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, weld symbols, bills of materials, and other written instructions or procedures to accurately create equipment and products
- Maintains inventory of manufacturing product and welding consumables
- Performs quality work checks to ensure the product meets quality standards
- Reworks and/or repairs welded parts and products according to engineering specification
- Responsible in work order generation and record keeping
- Adheres to the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to the job
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with county employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service
- Regular and reliable attendance and performance are required
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, And ABILITIES
- Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must have good knowledge of tasks and procedures required to perform the routine maintenance functions in the assigned department. Must be able to learn, comprehend, and apply all County or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
- Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
- Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
- Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with minimal latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
- Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certification in mechanics and training highly preferred in the related fields.
- 2-3 years of working experience in the automotive repair industry along with direct welding experience is preferred, but a combination of education along with experience may be considered.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license along with a clean MVR check.
ADA Requirements: Individuals applying for the posted position must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Physical Requirements: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50-100 pounds).
Work Environment: The work is typically performed in a shop or outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, traffic hazards, machinery with moving parts, inclement weather, wetness, humidity, and rain. The work may require protective devices such as masks and gloves.
