Job summary

The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing Company tractors and trailers (“RT Equipment”) to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. You will perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs across multiple systems including diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, and electrical components.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or trade school training preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in diesel, heavy equipment, or fleet maintenance preferred.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and fleet management systems (Fleetio experience preferred).
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and safety awareness.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
  • Able to provide own basic mechanic tools.

Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough diagnostic tests and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and other components to maintain fleet performance and safety.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance services to identify and address potential issues before they become major problems.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including parts usage and work performed, using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Ensure that all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and standards, including DOT and EPA requirements.
  • Assist in managing inventory levels of spare parts and order replacements as needed to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with other members of the maintenance team to share knowledge and best practices.
  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and provide on-call support as necessary to keep the fleet operational.

  • Maintain a valid driver's license that meets the Company’s insurance requirements.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak English.
Physical Requirements
  • Safely drive and operate a company vehicle, including precise operation of vehicle controls such as the steering wheel, pedals, and gear shifter.
  • Stay physically engaged, focused, alert, and responsive during extended shifts of 10+ hours.
  • Maintain strong situational and visual awareness in busy, noisy environments, such as truck yards and loading docks.
  • Respond to verbal instructions and audible alarms.
  • Maintain hand-eye coordination for the safe handling and operation of equipment and tools.
  • Stand or walk for much of the workday, including periods exceeding 8 hours.
  • Walk and stand on uneven terrain in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, dust, rain, and high-noise environments.
  • Climb ladders, stairs, and equipment.
  • Reach above shoulder level and work in confined spaces while wearing full PPE.
  • Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and crouch while performing job tasks.
  • Push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to steel-toed boots, coveralls, hard hats or bump caps, safety glasses, and appropriate gloves, as needed.
