DEPARTMENT: Fleet Maintenance POSITION STATUS: FULL-TIME
I. POSITION FUNCTION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Director and/or the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, provides a variety of skilled journey to master level tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of county mechanized diesel and gas equipment. Performs mechanic duties at Fleet Maintenance Department and/or in the field as necessary.
II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following statements are essential functions of this position and not intended to be all-inclusive; rather, they are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed.
- Performs all regular duties of a mechanic to repair and maintain all Taos County vehicles and motorized/hydraulic equipment in compliance with safety regulations and any other manufacturer specifications.
- Provides instruction and training related to complex heavy equipment and automotive projects.
- Performs troubleshooting and analysis of malfunctions using various technical computerized testing tools and hand testing and calibration equipment.
- Performs regular safety checks on motor vehicles and motorized equipment and machinery.
- Performs preventive maintenance and makes repairs to vehicles.
- Maintains internal combustion engines (gas and diesel), transmissions, differentials, air and hydraulic systems, electrical, computerized control systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, suspensions, brakes, tires, exhaust, etc.
- Performs emergency field repairs and service as needed.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems and components; assures proper function of vehicle radios, emergency equipment, and communication equipment.
- Performs general vehicle inspection; checks and maintains service schedules consistent with manufacturer specifications.
- Performs major and minor tune-ups using appropriate manual and electronic testing equipment.
- Performs welding, brazing, soldering; uses MIG, stick, and acetylene welders.
- Completes projects with appropriate layers or coats of paint.
- Fabricates braces, supports, and parts for old or worn-out units.
- Fabricates and welds equipment parts which are not readily available.
- May perform minor auto body maintenance, repair, and painting.
- Acquires, upon approval, parts and general supplies and assures general shop, equipment, and inventory security and control.
- Cleans shop area, tools, and equipment to maintain a safe work environment.
- Attends various schools and training programs as needed to develop skills in equipment maintenance.
- Operates heavy equipment as needed to assist in construction and maintenance projects.
- Maintains equipment repair logs and ensures that all documentation such as work orders are complete and accurate.

- Performs other duties as assigned.
IV. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:
This position is non-exempt under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The Fleet Mechanic works under general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Director and/or Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.
V. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma (or GED).
- Completion of one (1) year of specialized course work in diesel and automotive maintenance.
- Three (3) years of experience in major repair of gas and diesel vehicles.
- Must be a journey level mechanic.
Language Requirements:
- Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures and technical manuals.
Certification, Licenses and Registrations:
- Must have a current, valid State of New Mexico driver’s license.
Training/Professional Development Requirements:
- Must successfully complete all Taos County-required safety and other training.
Tools and Equipment Used:
- Standard office equipment and software.
- Hand tools, specialized auto part tools, and computerized testing tools.
Other:
- Must pass drug screen and background investigations.
