Job summary

Mustang Transportation in Idaho Falls is seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to inspect, maintain, and repair school buses, motor coaches, and support vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operation.

You will diagnose mechanical, electrical, and performance issues, perform preventative maintenance, and keep accurate maintenance records. The role requires being on-call for breakdowns and emergencies as needed, with a strong emphasis on safety and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Experience with diesel engines, buses, and heavy equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair independently.
  • Willingness to be on call for breakdowns.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair school buses, motor coaches, and support vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and performance issues.
  • Perform preventative maintenance (oil changes, filters, fluids, brakes, tires).
  • Complete repairs on diesel engines, air brake systems, suspension, HVAC, and related equipment.
  • Maintain maintenance records and parts usage documentation.
  • Coordinate with operations to ensure road-ready vehicles.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for breakdowns.

What You'll Do
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair school buses, motor coaches, and support vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and performance issues quickly and accurately.
  • Perform preventative maintenance including oil changes, filter cleanings and changes, fluid services, brake inspections, tire maintenance, and scheduled servicing.
  • Complete repairs on diesel engines, air brake systems, suspension components, HVAC systems, and related equipment.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and parts usage documentation.
  • Coordinate with operations personnel to ensure vehicles are available and road-ready.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections and identify potential issues before they become major repairs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to assist with breakdowns and emergency maintenance needs when required.
What We're Looking For
  • Experience working with diesel engines, buses, commercial vehicles, trucks, or heavy equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of repairs from diagnosis to completion.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic software, electronic troubleshooting tools, and modern vehicle systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively with drivers, dispatchers, and management.
  • Dependable attendance and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to learn new systems and adapt as our company continues to grow.
  • Available to be on call when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CDL Class B or higher with air brake, and passenger endorsements.
  • Previous bus, motor coach, school bus, or commercial fleet experience.
  • ASE certifications or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs.
