Job summary

Oxbow Pool and Landscape Contractors is seeking a Fleet Mechanic to inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair gas- and diesel-powered trucks, trailers, tractors, and landscape equipment. You will perform preventive maintenance, field service, and on-site repairs to maximize uptime and safety.

The role requires at least 3 years of maintenance experience, a valid California driver's license, and the ability to work independently while following safety guidelines.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical aptitude with diagnose/repair of engines, drivetrains, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, hydraulic, and cooling systems.

• Valid California Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening.
• Ability to work independently, manage tasks, and communicate effectively.
• Familiarity with safety practices and workplace compliance.
• Must be organized, dependable, and safety-oriented.

Responsibilities

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on gas- and diesel-powered fleet vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose and repair engine, drivetrain, brake, electrical, hydraulic, and cooling-system issues.
• Drive service truck to job sites for on-site repairs and field service.
• Document inspections, maintenance, parts used, and service due dates.
• Coordinate with Fleet Manager to maintain service stock and parts usage.
• Support emergency and urgent repairs to limit downtime.

Job description

The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing Oxbow Pool and Landscape Contractors’ gas- and diesel-powered trucks, vehicles, trailers, tractors, construction and landscape equipment, machinery, and small engines. This position performs preventive, routine, emergency, shop, and field maintenance to maximize equipment life, reliability, safety, and field readiness. The Fleet Mechanic reduces downtime and ensures crews have dependable vehicles, equipment, and tools to complete their work.

Job Requirements

• Experience diagnosing and repairing gas- and diesel-powered vehicles, tractors, construction equipment, and small engines preferred.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and repair engines, drivetrains, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, hydraulic, fuel, cooling, and small-engine systems.
• Proficient with tools and diagnostic equipment.

General Responsibilities

Routine Maintenance

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and services on gas- and diesel-powered fleet vehicles, trucks, trailers, tractors, construction equipment, landscape equipment, and small engines, including:
  • Oil and fluid changes
  • Tire rotations and replacements
  • Brake inspections, adjustments, and repairs
  • Fuel, cabin, and engine filter replacements
  • Wiper blade replacements
• Conduct seasonal and weather-specific maintenance to ensure optimal performance year-round.
• Diagnose and repair gas- and diesel-engine, drivetrain, brake, steering, suspension, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, and cooling-system issues.
• Troubleshoot and repair trucks, vehicles, trailers, tractors, construction and landscape equipment, machinery, and small engines.
• Perform shop-based and mobile field repairs on vehicles, tractors, and equipment using the service truck and appropriate diagnostic and repair tools.
• Support emergency and urgent repair needs to limit downtime.

Field Service & On-Site Repairs

• Drive and utilize the service truck to respond to vehicle, tractor, and equipment breakdowns at yards and active job sites.
• Evaluate mechanical problems on-site and perform safe mobile repairs when practical; arrange transport or outside repair when required.
• Communicate with site foremen to assess priorities and impacts.

Inspections & Documentation

• Perform multi-point inspections at each service interval.
• Document inspections, diagnostic findings, maintenance, repairs, parts used, meter or mileage readings, and the next service due.
• Maintain clear and accurate records for compliance and cost tracking.

Inventory Management

• Monitor shop supplies, fluids, filters, tires, batteries, and repair parts, and request or order replacements as authorized.
• Coordinate with Fleet Manager to maintain service stock for routine and emergency repairs.
• Track parts usage and costs.

Safety Practices

• Follow all company safety guidelines and procedures.
• Use PPE at all times and maintain a safe work area.
• Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or hazardous operations.
• Confirm that vehicles, tractors, equipment, and tools returned to crews are safe and ready for use; remove unsafe equipment from service and report it promptly.
• Work performed both indoors (shop) and outdoors (yard and field sites).
• Exposure to gasoline, diesel fuel, exhaust, oils, grease, batteries, chemicals, fumes, dust, vibration, noise, moving parts, heavy tools, uneven surfaces, and changing weather.
• Regular interaction with crew members, supervisors, foremen, vendors, outside repair providers, and delivery drivers.

Equipment Used

• Service/mechanic truck, vehicle lifts and hydraulic jacks, jack stands, air compressors, impact tools, battery and electrical testers, scan/diagnostic tools
• Power tools, grinders, welding equipment (if certified)
• Gas- and diesel-powered trucks and vehicles, tractors, forklifts, skid steers, trenchers, trailers, construction and landscape equipment, machinery, and small engines

Physical Demands

• Ability to independently lift, carry, position, and move parts, tools, and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds. Items over 75 pounds must be handled with another employee or appropriate mechanical lifting equipment.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting, climbing, and crawling under vehicles and equipment.
• Push or pull up to 150 pounds with assistance or mechanical aid.
• Use both hands and arms for sustained gripping, grasping, fine manipulation, reaching, torqueing, and operation of hand, power, and diagnostic tools for extended periods.
• Ability to safely enter and exit trucks and equipment and work indoors and outdoors in hot, cold, wet, dusty, dirty, and noisy environments while wearing required PPE.
