Job description

Job Title: Fleet Maintenance Technician II

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Reports to: Fleet Maintenance Supervisor

Pay Grade: 261 Day Calendar

Primary Purpose:

Maintain and ensure the safe condition and operation of all GCISD vehicles to guarantee the safety of students and employees.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Trade school, mechanical course, or equivalent highly desired.
• Preferred ASE or TASBT certification: minimum three in School Bus or HD Truck. Preferences include brakes, electrical, driveline, and steering/suspension; knowledge in diesel and alternative fuel engine repair is preferred.
• Obtain Class B CDL with Bus Endorsement, S, P, and Air Brake Endorsements within 90 days of employment, with an acceptable driving record.
• DOT Drug Testing and Physical Exam required.
• 3+ years of vehicle maintenance experience required.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Ability to read and interpret technical information.
• Ability to diagnose and resolve problems.
• Knowledge of school bus specifications and applicable statutes.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Maintenance and Repair

• Perform and track preventive maintenance and inspections.
• Respond to emergencies, including after-hours situations.
• Operate school buses and district vehicles; operate tools/equipment used in maintenance.
• Perform diagnosis, repair, and installation on gasoline and diesel engines, including fuel and electrical systems, suspension, steering, drivetrain, transmission, exhaust, brakes, HVAC, welding, and body work/fabrication.
• Must provide a basic set of tools.

Other

• Continuously upgrade skills through study and training.
• Communicate clearly and courteously with drivers, updating them on repairs and best practices.
• Maintain inventory of parts, tools, and supplies to ensure availability and safety.
• Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars to gather and share information.
• Assess incidents, accidents, and potential emergencies.
• Perform as a backup school bus driver for routes and field trips.
• Conduct road checks during bad weather and report to the Director.
• Prepare reports as required.
• Orient new bus drivers on bus features and operation to promote proper use and fleet longevity.

Safety

• Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure safety.
• Operate tools and equipment following safety procedures, using safety gear at all times.
• Follow safety procedures for lifting, climbing, etc.
• Identify and report unsafe conditions.
• Handle fuel spills and hazardous materials in compliance with laws and safety practices.

Equipment Used:

Computer, hand tools, power and air tools, brake lathe, tire balancer and mounting equipment, acetylene torch, welder, A/C recovery/recharging machine.

• Shop, office, yard, and vehicle environments; may require lifting 20 to 50 lbs.
• Work with diverse individuals.
• Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity.
• Exposure to temperature extremes, dust, fumes, odors, noise, and risk of injury or illness.
• Work indoors and outdoors year-round.
