Job summary

City of El Paso is seeking a temporary fleet mechanic to repair and maintain a range of city vehicles, including trucks, buses, and cars. Responsibilities include diagnosing issues, performing overhaul work as needed, and ensuring compliance with maintenance standards.

Incumbents may need ASE/CFR certifications, a valid CDL, and background checks for airport operations. Position is for 6 months with potential extension up to one year, reporting to the fleet supervisor.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED, or higher and two years of journey level automotive or diesel mechanic experience.
• Some positions may require ASE certification within six months of appointment.
• Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.
• Some positions may require Texas Class “B” CDL or equivalent from another state.
• Some positions may require EPA certification for refrigerant recycling and recovery within six months of appointment.
• Criminal background check and federally mandated security clearance for airport work may be required.

Responsibilities

• Perform and undertake a variety of fleet repair, maintenance and upkeep of work assignments.
• Repair, recondition and maintain trucks, automobiles, buses and other City vehicles and equipment with gasoline, diesel or alternative fuels.
• Assess, diagnose, analyze, recommend and undertake overhaul repair and maintenance as per work orders.
• Identify parts, supplies and materials needed; remove, inspect, install and replace components; test repairs.
• Maintain files, records, logs and reports; interact with officials and the public to provide information and resolve inquiries.
• Perform duties of immediate supervisor or coworkers during absences and keep area clean.
