Berkeley Unified School District is seeking a journey-level mechanic to maintain and repair a broad range of district vehicles and heavy equipment, including EV and diesel buses. You will diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
The role requires experience with high-voltage systems, appropriate certifications, and the ability to communicate with operations staff and drivers.
Heavy vehicle and equipment mechanic expertise performing maintenance, testing equipment, and diagnosing issues with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Repair and maintenance on of a variety of heavy-duty district vehicles and heavy equipment including gasoline and diesel vehicles.
Perform related duties as assigned
Techniques and practices of maintenance and repair of heavy and light automotive vehicles and maintenance equipment
Specialized techniques in electric-powered school buses and automotive vehicles
Operation, theory and principles of assigned activities
High-voltage battery systems, electric drivetrains, charging, and associated software.
Methods, equipment, tools and materials used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment Diagnostic procedures for vehicles and equipment
Technical aspects of field of specialty, including analog and digital electronic equipment installed in vehicles Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance
Health and safety regulations including the handling and use of high-voltage electric buses and vehicles
Proper safety, handling and use of hazardous materials
Advanced computer operations and communications, including all types of scanning tools and software related to the variety of systems in modern vehicles and buses
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by specialized training in the repair and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, and CNG- powered equipment and vehicles, EV equipment and vehicles. high-voltage battery systems, electric drivetrains, charging systems, associated software and four years of verifiable journey-level automotive or diesel maintenance and repair experience
Valid and current California Class A or B Commercial Driver License with appropriate passenger and air brake endorsements
Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate

AC609 Certification or the ability to obtain within the 6-month probationary period
HD I/M (Smog) Tester
Good DMV driving record and ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy Incumbents in this classification are subject to federal drug and alcohol testing requirements

The first step in the examination process is the application screening, and whether or not the candidate meets the minimum qualifications listed.
The testing process may consist of a written exam, an oral exam, a performance exam, a structured interview (SI), a qualification appraisal interview (QAI), an evaluation of training & experience/education (T&E), and/or any combination thereof.
All tests will have a passing score set between 50 and 99, depending on a variety of factors affecting that specific recruitment.
The testing process consists of a minimum of two examination processes,
FIRST EXAMINATION: 50%
SECOND EXAMINATION: 50%
Proof of identification for completion of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, must be submitted at the time of processing for employment.

Appointments are made at the minimum salary shown in the posting, and increases are granted at intervals based on anniversary date.

SALARIES: All salaries as stated are based on present information and are subject to change. Appointments are made at the minimum salary shown and increases are granted at intervals based on satisfactory service.
Health plans provide for full coverage for employees and family in the area of medical and dental insurance to a negotiated maximum. All employees who work an average regular assignment of less than 5-1/2 hours a day (.72 FTE or less) shall be entitled to health insurance coverage and dental insurance coverage on a pro-rated basis. This position is covered by Social Security and may be eligible for California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), with joint employee and employer paid contributions. Current members of CalPERS working in other California state, county, city, and school districts can transfer retirement service credit to the District. All employees are enrolled in an Employee Assistant Program (EAP). The District also offers various optional benefits including life insurance, short term disability, Vision Service Plan (VSP), and a medical and dependent care flexible spending option.
1-3 Years: Ten (10) working days per year until he/she has completed four (4) years of service.
4-9 Years: Fifteen (15) working days per year until he/she has completed ten (10) years of service.
10-14 Years: Twenty (20) working days per year until he/she has completed fifteen (15) years of service.
15+ Years: Twenty-five (25) working days per year.
Regular twelve (12) month employees shall accrue two (2) additional days of vacation per year at each step indicated above.

Candidates selected for appointment may be required to pass a medical examination given by a Commission-designated physician to determine physical fitness for District employment. The Commission may disqualify any eligible candidates on the basis of the examining physician's report. The District also conducts a fingerprinting background check for all potential candidates for hire. All convictions must be declared and explained on the application; failure to do so will automatically disqualify the application. Tuberculosis tests must be completed and a negative result must be supplied prior to beginning work.
