Job summary

Republic Services is seeking a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor to oversee a team of technicians in performing preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel and alternate fuel trucks, containers, and heavy equipment. You will plan, schedule, and direct work to ensure safety, compliance, and timely completion, while maintaining parts inventory and budget controls.

The role requires 3 years in heavy equipment maintenance and 1 year of supervisory experience, plus ASE certifications across diesel,

Qualifications

  • 3 years of experience in maintenance with heavy equipment.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience in a lead technician role or management role.
  • ASE certifications in Diesel, Drive, Brake, Suspension/Steering, Electrical/Electronic, HVAC, and ASE Master.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct a team of technicians to perform safe, efficient repairs and maintenance.
  • Plan and schedule repair work to meet deadlines while controlling costs.
  • Oversee shop operations, conduct coaching, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Hire/terminate in coordination with Human Resources.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, DOT, OSHA and regulations; inspect outside repairs.
  • Monitor inventory, manage parts, and approve expenses within budget.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of engines, emissions, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, and electrical systems.

Position Summary

The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for supervising a maintenance shop under the umbrella responsibility of a Maintenance Manager. The role oversees a technician (mechanic) team conducting preventive maintenance and repair of a fleet, machinery supporting the post‑collection facility, equipment servicing the container shop, and provides direction to technicians to ensure all repairs/maintenance of equipment (including diesel and alternate fuel trucks, containers, and other heavy‑duty equipment) comply with Company safety and compliance standards and all federal and state regulations. The supervisor plans and schedules repair work for the work group to ensure all work is completed safely and on time, reducing lost productivity.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Provide direction to A, B and C level technicians and lead technicians assigned to the work group to ensure that all repair and maintenance work is performed in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • Monitor operational performance and efficiency, taking action to redirect activities appropriately.
  • Report to management on performance and make recommendations for process or programmatic changes for improvement or efficiencies.
  • Supervise daily shop operations, including conducting shop huddles, fleet walks, coaching, counseling, training, and performance evaluations for all technician levels.
  • Make hiring and termination decisions in concert with Human Resources.
  • Conduct inspections of outside repairs to ensure compliance with safety and compliance procedures and federal and state regulations; follow up where appropriate.
  • Identify training opportunities, document issues, and discuss corrective action with technicians as needed.
  • Conduct quality control inspections, track issues, and ensure all work is properly completed.
  • Oversee repair diagnostics on complex matters, provide coaching, and conduct road tests to determine necessary repairs.
  • Manage inventory control system to maintain necessary equipment and parts levels and keep purchases within budget.
  • Review and approve expenses within scope of approval level; refer larger expenses or major repairs to the manager as appropriate.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of engine, emission systems, transmission, brake, hydraulic, and electrical systems to perform advanced preventive and repair maintenance functions on heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Manage related administrative matters, including payroll, maintenance of employee records, preventive and corrective maintenance documentation, data entry into Dossier Maintenance Software, budget preparation, and setting departmental goals aligned with division leadership targets.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications: T2 Diesel Engine, T3 Drive, T4 Brake, T5 Suspension and Steering, T6 Electrical/Electronic, T7 HVAC Systems, and ASE Master Certified (T).
Minimum Requirements
  • 3 years of experience in maintenance working with heavy equipment.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience in a lead technician role, supervisor, or other management role requiring a thorough knowledge of safe working practices, DOT, OSHA and other federal and state regulations.
