Job description

An employee in this class services, diagnoses, and repairs passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and heavy equipment for the city fleet. The employee ensures all aspects of repairs are completed, including paperwork submission. Repair work includes addressing breakdowns, malfunctions, and emergency roadside repairs, ensuring the safe operating condition of fleet vehicles. Work resources may include manuals, videos, and supervisor instructions. The role requires thorough mechanical knowledge and repair skills for all vehicle types. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent and is evaluated through service logs, reports, and completed work. This classification is considered non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Diagnosing vehicle malfunctions to determine needed repairs or replacements.
  • Inspecting, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g., tractors, backhoes, forklifts, mixers, skip loaders) to ensure safe operation.
  • Responding to emergency roadside assistance.
  • Performing maintenance and repair welding on equipment; fabricating parts as needed.
  • Diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems.
  • Ordering and retrieving necessary parts for repairs.
  • Checking vehicle reports for conditions needing attention and upgrades for more efficient repairs.
  • Communicating repairs to clients and providing estimated return-to-service times.
  • Maintaining maintenance records.
  • Performing final operational tests on vehicles to quality-check repairs.
  • Performing related duties as required.

Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED

Driver's License: North Carolina Class C; obtain North Carolina Class B within 6 months

Technical Certifications: Auto and Light Truck Certifications or equivalent (minimum of 4)

Experience: 2-3 years

  • Ability to perform vehicle and equipment maintenance duties effectively and consistently.

  • Knowledge of hazards involved in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring schematics.

  • Knowledge of maintenance, repair, and replacement methods for various equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and techniques in diesel and gas engine mechanics.
  • Welding and cutting experience.
  • Effective communication skills with the public and team members.
  • Customer service skills, including responding to complaints and problem-solving.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and safe working practices.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with supervisors, peers, and subordinates.
