Job summary

City of Waco is seeking a skilled mechanic to perform maintenance, repairs, and preventive maintenance on Fleet Services vehicles, specialty vehicles, and heavy equipment. The role requires safe work practices, reliable diagnostic ability, and the ability to work under basic supervision in a city service environment.

The position involves servicing a diverse fleet, diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, and completing work orders with attention to safety and efficiency.

Qualifications

• Valid Texas Driver's License is required.
• HS Diploma or GED equivalent.
• 2 years of experience in maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Associate's degree or higher in Automotive Technology may substitute for experience.
• Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License is required within 180 days.

Responsibilities

• Performs maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on a diverse fleet of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, equipment and machinery; adheres to safety regulations and city procedures.
• Inspects and diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues; prioritizes repairs and completes work within authority and training.
• Performs preventive maintenance and diagnostics to maximize life cycle and reduce downtime; prepares equipment for safety compliance.
• Inspects vehicle status, conducts safety inspections, and recommends replacement or major repair options; installs specialized equipment.
• Transports equipment to the repair shop; performs emergency repairs in the field when needed and reports issues beyond authority.
• Maintains service records, opens/closes work orders, and documents hours, parts, and repairs.
• Orders parts as needed and maintains stock inventory; keeps shop clean and safe.

Education

High School Diploma or GED

Associate's degree or higher in Automotive Technology

Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 180 Days
