Job summary

United Utility Services is seeking a skilled Fleet Field Mechanic to maintain and repair our fleet vehicles and equipment across field and job-site locations in Georgia. You will diagnose diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and related systems, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure safety for roadside and remote locations.

Regular travel and overnight stays are expected. This role requires independent field work, strong diagnostic abilities, and coordination with OEMs and vendors.

Qualifications

• Five+ years of field-service or heavy equipment repair experience preferred.
• Vocational or technical training in diesel, automotive, hydraulics, or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, inspect, diagnose, and repair fleet vehicles and equipment at field locations and job sites.

• Troubleshoot diesel engine, hydraulic, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, driveline, PTO, and related systems.

The salary for this position is $36 per hour. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.

About The Role

The Fleet Field Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing company fleet vehicles and equipment at field and job-site locations. This position supports utility construction operations by ensuring vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable, and operational. The Fleet Field Mechanic must be capable of working independently in the field, troubleshooting complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel-related issues with limited supervision. Regular travel, including overnight travel, is required to support field locations, crews, and emergency repair needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain, inspect, diagnose, and repair company fleet vehicles and equipment at field locations and job sites.
• Support a diverse fleet that may include:
• Bucket trucks
• Digger derricks
• Material handlers
• Service trucks
• Pickup trucks
• Heavy-duty commercial vehicles
• Tractor/trailers
• Equipment and material trailers
• Skid steers
• Excavators
• Pullers and tensioners
• Other utility construction and heavy equipment
• Perform routine and preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter services, lubrication, fluid inspections, scheduled maintenance, and manufacturer-recommended services.
• Diagnose and repair diesel engine, hydraulic, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, driveline, PTO, outrigger, and related vehicle and equipment systems.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems including pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, fittings, controls, and PTO-driven systems.
• Troubleshoot 12- and 24-volt electrical systems including starting and charging systems, brakes, wiring, sensors, relays, lighting, multiplex systems, and CAN-bus-related issues.
• Diagnose diesel emissions and aftertreatment systems including DEF, DPF, SCR, and related components.
• Inspect and repair hydraulic and air brake systems as applicable.
• Utilize OEM diagnostic software, scan tools, digital multimeters, hydraulic test equipment, and other diagnostic tools to identify equipment failures.
• Identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural concerns through inspection, testing, diagnostic equipment, and visual examination.
• Examine critical vehicle and equipment systems using inspection procedures and checklists.
• Repair or replace malfunctioning components including brakes, belts, hoses, water pumps, alternators, starters, transmissions, driveline components, hydraulic components, and other mechanical systems.
• Perform field repairs independently and determine whether equipment can safely return to service or should be removed from service until repairs are completed.
• Immediately communicate unsafe conditions or equipment requiring out-of-service status to the Fleet Manager and appropriate Operations personnel.
• Test-drive or function-test equipment following repairs to verify safe and proper operation.
• Plan repairs and establish realistic timelines for completing maintenance and repair work.
• Communicate repair status, estimated completion times, parts requirements, delays, and operational impacts to the Fleet Manager and appropriate Operations personnel.
• Prioritize repairs based on safety, operational needs, equipment availability, and business requirements.
• Respond to breakdowns and unscheduled repair needs at job sites and remote locations.
• Visit field locations on short notice when required to inspect, diagnose, maintain, or repair equipment.
• Support storm response, emergency operations, outages, and other business needs that may require extended hours, weekends, holidays, or overnight travel.
• Order or coordinate parts needed to complete repairs.
• Coordinate with OEM manufacturers, dealerships, rental companies, vendors, and third-party repair facilities when additional technical assistance or outside repair support is required.
• Accurately document all maintenance and repair activity in the company's fleet management system, including:
• Labor hours
• Repair descriptions
• Parts used
• Inspection results
• Equipment status
• Photographs
• Follow-up repairs or recommendations
• Maintain accurate and timely electronic records using company-issued computers, tablets, mobile devices, email, and fleet management software.
• Maintain assigned service truck, tools, diagnostic equipment, parts inventory, and other company property in a clean, safe, organized, and serviceable condition.
• Account for company tools, parts, materials, and equipment assigned to the technician.
• Follow applicable DOT, OSHA, manufacturer, company, and customer safety requirements.
• Maintain a professional working relationship with Operations personnel, vendors, customers, and other Fleet team members.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Ability to work effectively with field personnel, supervisors, vendors, and Fleet management.

Key Qualifications

• Five or more years of field-service or heavy-equipment repair experience preferred.
• Vocational or technical training in diesel, automotive, heavy equipment, hydraulics, electrical systems, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent demonstrated work experience will be considered.
• Previous experience servicing utility fleet equipment such as bucket trucks, digger derricks, material handlers, or similar equipment is strongly preferred.
• Class A CDL is preferred.
• Must maintain a DOT medical certification necessary to operate assigned commercial vehicles.
• Must maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record and remain eligible to operate company vehicles under company insurance requirements.
• Experience with air brakes, commercial vehicle systems, and DOT-regulated equipment preferred.
• Experience using OEM diagnostic software and electronic diagnostic tools preferred.
• Familiarity with fleet management systems such as Fleetio and Samsara platforms preferred.
• Must have proficiency using a computer, tablet, mobile device, and email.

• Work Environment

Work Environment

This position operates primarily in field, construction, roadside, industrial, and outdoor environments. The employee may routinely work around commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, moving machinery, traffic, construction activities, and other potential hazards. The position requires work in varying and sometimes severe weather conditions, including:

• Extreme heat
• Cold temperatures

• Snow or ice when applicable
• High humidity
• Dusty or dirty environments

Employees may work extended shifts, including 10-hour or longer workdays, depending on operational requirements. Normally, 40 to 50 hours weeks.

The position requires frequent travel to job sites and field locations that may be significant distances apart.

Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required by the company, customer, job site, and applicable safety regulations.
