4 days ago Requisition ID: 1015

Salary Range: $75,000.00 To $90,000.00 Annually

Fleet and Equipment Manager

Location: Northern New Jersey
Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Reports To: President
Salary Range:$75,000–$90,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications

Position Overview

Metro Ambulance is seeking a proactive and highly organized Fleet and Equipment Manager to lead the readiness, maintenance coordination, and logistical support of our ambulance fleet and operational equipment.

Supporting a 24/7 emergency medical services operation, this manager will maintain a clear and accurate understanding of vehicle condition, fleet availability, equipment readiness, repairs, and downtime. The position directly affects our ability to deploy crews safely, respond to daily service demands, and provide reliable patient transportation.

This is not primarily a mechanic position. The successful candidate should understand vehicle maintenance and repair processes well enough to oversee shop activity, evaluate service recommendations, and manage outside vendors. The greater priority is strong ownership, urgency, organization, sound judgment, and consistent follow-through.

  • Maintain daily oversight of approximately 30 units and related support vehicles.
  • Track vehicle condition, availability, assignments, repairs, preventive maintenance, and out-of-service time.
  • Ensure ambulances are safe, clean, properly equipped, compliant, and ready for daily operations.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, towing, roadside assistance, and emergency service needs.
  • Oversee the work of internal shop personnel and outside repair vendors, including repair quality, turnaround time, estimates, invoices, and warranty coverage.
  • Communicate vehicle availability, repair priorities, and anticipated service disruptions to Dispatch Operations, and senior leadership.
  • Maintain accountability for stretchers, stair chairs, oxygen systems, AEDs, suction units, radios, tablets, mobility equipment, safety supplies, and other assigned operational equipment.
  • Ensure required medical and operational equipment is inspected, serviced, documented, and available for use.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels for equipment, medical supplies, vehicle supplies, and frequently used replacement items.
  • Review driver inspection reports, defect reports, telematics information, repair records, and equipment concerns.
  • Establish clear procedures for removing unsafe vehicles or equipment from service and returning them to operation.
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and inspection-ready fleet, maintenance, equipment, warranty, and regulatory records.
  • Coordinate vehicle accident and damage documentation with Operations, Safety, Human Resources, insurers, and repair vendors.
  • Monitor fleet and equipment costs and identify opportunities to reduce downtime, prevent repeat repairs, control expenses, and improve reliability.
  • Develop practical systems, checklists, and accountability measures that support consistent fleet and equipment readiness.
  • Provide responsive leadership when urgent vehicle or equipment issues arise.
Qualifications
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in fleet operations, EMS operations, logistics, transportation, vehicle maintenance coordination, equipment management, or a related field.
  • Prior leadership experience overseeing employees, vendors, projects, or a fleet-related function.
  • Experience managing preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, vehicle records, vendors, and operational priorities.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair processes; direct experience as a mechanic is not required.
  • Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and respond appropriately to urgent operational needs.
  • Comfortable using fleet-management systems, telematics, electronic inspection tools, spreadsheets, and other business technology.
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets company and insurance requirements.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
Preferred Experience
  • Ambulance, EMS, healthcare transportation, paratransit, public-safety, or other mission-critical fleet experience.
  • Experience overseeing medical equipment, oxygen systems, emergency vehicle equipment, or controlled operational inventory.
  • Familiarity with Samsara or a comparable telematics platform.
  • Knowledge of applicable New Jersey EMS vehicle and equipment requirements.
  • Degree or certification in fleet management, logistics, automotive technology, business, emergency management, or a related field.
  • EMT certification or prior EMS field experience is helpful but not required.
Schedule and Availability

This is primarily an on-site Monday-through-Friday daytime management position supporting a 24/7 operation. The Fleet and Equipment Manager must have sufficient flexibility to respond to urgent vehicle, equipment, accident, or operational issues outside normal business hours, including occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays.

The Leadership Approach We Need

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the entire fleet and equipment function. The right person does not wait for repeated direction or allow known problems to remain unresolved.
