Job summary

Michigan Medicine is seeking an Environmental Services Technician responsible for terminal cleaning of operating rooms, floor scrubbing, and waste handling. This 40-hour, night-shift role requires teamwork and strict adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities
  • Perform terminal cleaning of operating room suites.
  • Operate mechanical cleaning and scrubbing equipment; strip and refinish floor surfaces.
  • Collect and transport waste materials/soiled linen to a central location, wash walls and ceilings, clean restrooms, and operate vacuum cleaning equipment.
  • Be able to perform all cleaning duties that relate to the Environmental Services Department.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand English.
  • Must be able to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities, including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, etc
  • Must not have any type of lifting restrictions.
  • Must be able to work around sick and disabled patients (children and adults) within a hospital setting.
  • Must be a team player, able to prioritize work, and be able to handle stress on a daily basis.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This position is 40 hours / Nights / Monday-Friday / 9:00 PM - 5:30 AM

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third‑party administrator to conduct background screenings.
