Description

JT Cullen builds complex, high-requirement fabricated structures for customers who expect quality work done right. We support projects across nuclear energy, rail, power, mobility, and heavy industry - work that demands accuracy, consistency, and pride in craftsmanship.

We’re a family-oriented, 100% employee-owned company. We offer competitive benefits, an employer-funded retirement plan with an optional 401(k), and a workplace that values the people doing the work and the craftsmanship they bring every day.

About The Role

We are currently looking for fitters to support growing fabrication demand across heavy industrial, power, rail, and renewable energy projects. This is hands‑on shop work - real steel, real projects, and real expectations. Most welding is MIG (GMAW), with opportunities to work in TIG (GTAW), Stick (SMAW), and Sub Arc (SAW) depending on experience and project needs. If you take pride in your craft, we want to talk.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings and weld symbols
  • Measure, mark, and lay out material according to print specifications
  • Fit and align structural and fabricated components
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, and squareness of assemblies
  • Tack weld components to hold assemblies in place prior to final welding
  • Use clamps, fixtures, templates, and layout tools to position parts
  • Work closely with welders to ensure assemblies are ready for welding
  • Identify and resolve fit‑up issues during fabrication
  • Use grinders and fabrication tools to prepare parts and edges
  • Follow safety, quality, and housekeeping standards

Skills We Are Looking For

  • Strong blueprint reading ability
  • Experience fitting large structural and complex assemblies
  • Ability to interpret weld symbols and dimensional tolerances
  • Experience using layout tools, squares, and measuring equipment
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong problem‑solving ability
  • Strong attention to detail and workmanship
  • Safety-focused mindset
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work independently
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Prior fabrication shop, structural steel, or heavy industrial experience
  • Strong understanding of welding processes, joint design, and weld quality requirements.

Pre-Employment Skills Evaluation

Final candidates will complete a fit and layout test as part of the interview process. Testing is administered on site by our Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) and welding supervisors.

Indoor working conditions change with outside temperature changes and can include airborne particles, odors, mists and oil/grease. Standing, lifting, grinding, and welding throughout the shift. May occasionally work outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

Why JT Cullen?

We’re not a job shop chasing quick wins. We build complex, high-requirement projects for customers who care about quality, accuracy, and execution. That means steady work, clear expectations, and respect for people who know their trade.

We offer competitive pay, strong health and medical benefits, and a work culture that respects work‑life balance, values craftsmanship, and recognizes the people who make the work happen.
