Job Title - Fitness Trainer/Instructor
Location: 2807 Lake Michigan Drive, Grand Rapids, MI
Job Summary
The Fitness Trainer will be responsible for leading the Planet Fitness group fitness program (PE@PF), including small-group classes and assisting members in achieving their fitness goals through designing simple workout programs and instructing proper equipment use. This is an hourly, non-exempt position reporting to the Club Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties
Essential Duties
- Execute the PE@PF program according to schedule, teaching 11-14 thirty-minute small-group classes daily.
- Teach exercise form, technique, progressions, and regressions through demonstration and cueing.
- Meet with members individually and in small groups to design personalized exercise programs based on their experience, medical background, and goals.
- Consult with members on fitness goals and proper equipment use, submitting training logs for review.
- Engage members via calls and other communication to schedule orientations and program classes.
- Create and update exercise programs for small groups and classes bi-weekly.
- Track attendance and success metrics, striving for continuous improvement.
- Support club operations by inspecting equipment and supplies, maintaining cleanliness, monitoring equipment use, and responding to emergencies.
- Assist front desk activities as needed, including answering calls, checking members in, and introducing new members.
- Ensure member confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and related laws.
Essential Physical Requirements
- Ability to move continuously, including bending, walking, standing, and remaining stationary periodically.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs regularly, and occasionally 75 lbs.
- Ability to wear a backpack vacuum weighing up to 15 lbs.
- Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals, following safety practices.
- Reliable commute in all weather conditions.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience in personal or group training preferred; a bachelor’s in exercise science is a plus.
- Must be 18+ years old.
- Current CPR certification (employer-paid).
- Certification from ACE, NCSF, NASM, or similar NCCA-accredited organization.
- Passion for fitness, positive attitude, punctuality, and reliability.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Experience designing small group programs using various exercise modalities.
- Proficiency in basic software applications, including Google Suite and DataTrak or similar.
Salary and Benefits
- Starting wage of $14/hour, with potential advancement after 6 months, plus $2 shift premium for hours 10pm-7am.
- Annual bonus up to $1,200.
