Job summary

Penobscot Bay YMCA seeks a Fitness Coordinator/Specialist to support the Health & Wellness Department by delivering high-quality fitness experiences for members of all ages and abilities. Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework in exercise science or related field preferred.
  • Current nationally recognized Personal Training certification preferred or required within a set timeframe after hire.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment and safe exercise techniques.
  • Ability to work with members of varying ages, abilities and backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to build relationships with members.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and engage members on the fitness floor, welcome and guide new members, and promote a welcoming environment.
  • Conduct and coordinate new member orientations and instruct proper use of equipment.
  • Provide one-on-one personal training and lead small-group sessions; match members with appropriate trainers.
  • Develop safe, goal-oriented exercise programs and track progress while maintaining records.
  • Lead or assist with introductory fitness programming and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA initiatives.
  • Maintain a clean, safe fitness environment and ensure equipment safety and compliance with policies.

Fitness Coordinator/Specialist
Position Summary

The Fitness Coordinator/Specialist supports the Health & Wellness Department by delivering high-quality fitness experiences for YMCA members of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. This role combines member engagement and orientation, personal training coordination and delivery, program instruction, fitness floor support, and wellness services.

The Fitness Coordinator/Specialist plays an important role in creating a welcoming, safe, clean, and motivating environment where members feel supported in reaching their health and wellness goals. This position models the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility and helps strengthen the YMCA community by building positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.

Essential Functions
Member Support, New Member Orientation & Fitness Floor Engagement
  • Provide active supervision, support, and member engagement on the fitness floor.
  • Welcome members and proactively offer assistance, guidance, and encouragement.
  • Conduct and coordinate new member fitness center orientations, including instruction on the safe and effective use of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment.
  • Assist members with proper equipment use, basic exercise technique, and general fitness guidance within the scope of the position.
  • Help members become comfortable and confident using YMCA fitness facilities and programs.
  • Promote a welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging environment for members of all fitness levels and abilities.
  • Monitor equipment use and member activity to ensure YMCA safety standards and fitness center policies are followed.
  • Build positive relationships with members and identify opportunities to connect them with YMCA programs, services, and resources.
Personal Training Coordination & Delivery
  • Provide one-on-one personal training sessions for YMCA members.
  • Lead small-group training sessions as appropriate.
  • Meet with prospective personal training clients to understand their goals, experience, preferences, and availability.
  • Coordinate new personal training clients with existing YMCA personal trainers, helping match members with appropriate staff based on goals, availability, and trainer experience.
  • Develop safe, appropriate, and goal-oriented exercise programs within professional scope of practice.
  • Track member progress and adjust programming as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation as required.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and follow all YMCA personal training standards, policies, and procedures.
Program Instruction & Development
  • Lead or assist with introductory fitness programming, including Intro to Strength Training and similar programs designed to help members safely and confidently begin or expand their fitness routines.
  • Develop, promote, and recruit participants for additional fitness classes, small-group training, and wellness programming based on member interest and community needs.
  • Support delivery of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, helping participants affected by cancer regain strength, confidence, and overall wellness in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Assist with the development and expansion of fitness and wellness programming for new and existing members.
  • Encourage participant engagement, retention, and continued involvement in YMCA programs.
Facility Care, Cleaning & Safety

Maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming fitness environment is an essential responsibility of this position.

  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and overall appearance of the fitness center throughout each shift.
  • Regularly wipe down and sanitize fitness equipment, machines, benches, mats, and other high-touch surfaces.
  • Sweep and mop floors as needed to maintain clean and safe fitness areas.
  • Ensure weights, equipment, accessories, and supplies are returned to their designated locations.
  • Keep walkways and workout spaces organized and free of hazards.
  • Complete laundry duties as needed, including towels, cleaning cloths, and other fitness center items.
  • Restock cleaning supplies, towels, and other fitness center materials.
  • Conduct routine visual checks of fitness equipment and immediately report damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Promptly report facility maintenance needs, hazards, injuries, incidents, or other safety concerns.
  • Follow all YMCA safety, emergency response, risk management, and cleaning procedures.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; education or coursework in exercise science, kinesiology, health and wellness, or a related field preferred.
  • Current nationally recognized Personal Training certification preferred or required within an established timeframe after hire.
  • Previous experience in personal training, fitness instruction, strength training, wellness programming, or a related role preferred.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment and safe exercise techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals of varying ages, abilities, fitness levels, and backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to build positive relationships with members.
  • Comfortable initiating conversations, providing instruction, and encouraging member participation.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple member and program needs.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of the YMCA team.
  • Must maintain required YMCA certifications and complete required trainings within established timeframes.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification required within the timeframe established by the YMCA.
  • Must successfully complete all required background screening and child abuse prevention and safety training.
Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Ability to demonstrate cardiovascular and strength-training equipment and exercises.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, reach, squat, kneel, push, pull, and perform other movements associated with fitness instruction and facility care.
  • Ability to safely lift, move, and organize fitness equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to perform routine cleaning duties, including wiping equipment, sweeping, mopping, and handling laundry.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations within the fitness facility.
