Job summary

City of Muskogee is seeking a Fitness Attendant to assist with facility operations, member services and safety. The role includes supervising recreation spaces, guiding patrons on equipment use, and managing membership data with front-desk duties.

The ideal candidate holds a high school diploma or equivalent and has at least 6 months in related work. Training in fitness programs and strong customer service are preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent with 6 months related experience.
• Knowledge of fitness systems and proper techniques used in a recreation facility.
• Ability to effectively deal with customers and the public; enforce operating policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assist recreation staff with scheduling, supervision and upkeep of facilities and equipment, including opening/closing.
• Answer and direct calls, provide information at the front desk and manage meetings/appointments.
• Monitor fitness center for safety and instruct patrons in equipment usage.
• Enroll and renew facility memberships and programs; perform front desk sales and data entry.
• Handle customer needs at the front desk and process daily receipts; perform light cleaning and maintenance.
• Conduct facility tours and report maintenance needs; operate office equipment and learn new technologies.

PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:

Assists members and guests of the Muskogee Swim & Fitness Center with proper use of equipment and other related duties that may be assigned.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

• Assists recreation personnel in the scheduling, supervision and upkeep of recreation facilities and equipment including the opening or closing of the facility.
• Operates telephone to answer, screen and forward call and provide information as necessary and required.

• Monitors fitness center to ensure safe exercise atmosphere and provides instruction to patrons in the proper use of all facility equipment.
• Receives phone calls and visitors and arranges meetings, appointments and schedules.
• Utilizes knowledge of all facility programs, membership information and sales operations to effectively enroll and renew facility memberships and special programs and class participation.
• Handles customer needs, front desk point of sales and membership data entry.

• Interprets recreation programs and department procedures to groups and individuals.
• Cleans and maintains fitness and weight room equipment. Light cleaning of office and surrounding areas.
• Operates office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, and phone systems, and uses computers for spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and other applications; learns to operate new office technologies as they are developed and implemented.
• Sweeps, mops tile and rubber floors.
• Launders cleaning towels used to wipe down equipment.
• Reports equipment maintenance needs and assists in assembling and disassembling recreational equipment.

• Conducts tours of the facility.
• Handles customer needs, front desk point of sales and membership data entry.
• Receives, reports, and deposits any daily receipts.
• Performs other work as necessary and or as assigned.
• Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Fitness Attendant reports directly to the Fitness Coordinator.

The Fitness Attendant does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of related experience. Preference will be given to those with college level training in Recreation, Health Promotion, Sports Management or other fitness related areas.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Working knowledge of all fitness systems and proper techniques used in a recreation and fitness facility. Knowledge of facility membership software system which will be acquired during employment. Ability to effectively deal with customers and the public; ability to enforce operating policies and procedures in an effective and courteous manner; ability to establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with coworkers and center patrons; ability to repair non-working fitness equipment; ability to keep simple records.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class D driver’s license is required. Requires CPR, AED and First Aid Certification.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed indoors in a fitness/aquatic facility. The employee is exposed to hot, wet and humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Requires ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled.
