Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky seeks a Fish and Wildlife Technician II to support the Streams Investigations Branch. You will assist with sampling fish populations, maintain sampling gear and help compile data to support management recommendations for Kentucky streams and rivers.

The role involves fieldwork outdoors, operating boats and sampling equipment, and working closely with biologists and other staff to advance fish and wildlife resource protections.

Qualifications

• High school graduate.
• One year of fishery, wildlife or habitat management/development experience.
• Additional related training may substitute for the required experience.
• Experience in fisheries, wildlife or habitat management may substitute for the required education.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain required credentials.

Responsibilities

• Assist biologist with field data collections using standardized methods.
• Operate and maintain project equipment (boats, trailers, nets, sampling gear).
• Assist in design and fabrication of equipment as needed.
• Perform data entry and results compilations.
• Assist staff with population studies and habitat improvement work.
• Initiate purchases and manage project inventories per policy.
• Interact professionally with the public.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The Fish and Wildlife Technician II position provides critical support to the Program Coordinator andbiologist in the Streams Investigations Branch. Along with assisting with sampling of fish populations,maintaining equipment needed to perform the fish population sampling, and assists in compiling data. Propersampling is vital in making management recommendations for streams and rivers in Kentucky.

Responsibilities

• Assist biologist(s) with field data collections using standardized fisheries methods and appropriategear types.
• Operate and maintain all project equipment including boats, trailers, vehicles, trap nets, hoop nets, gill nets, trot lines and other sampling equipment and prepares for field use.
• Assist in design and fabrication of equipment as needed.
• Perform data entry and results compilations.
• Assist other fisheries staff with population studies, habitat improvement work, fish harvest and fishtransport.
• Initiate purchases as directed by following state and agency policies and procedures. Assist inmaintaining project inventories.
• Interact professionally with the public.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have one year of fishery, wildlife or habitat management/development experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional related training will substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in fisheries, wildlife or habitat management/development will substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Travel, extreme weather conditions, heavy equipment and wildlife may pose hazards.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
