Job summary

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking a field-focused position to coordinate and perform various activities across regions and statewide programs. You will collect fish for analysis, supervise routine sampling, and help maintain equipment while delivering fishing education programs.

Responsibilities include managing field crews, overseeing GIS tasks, and ensuring safety in remote and challenging terrains.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.
• One year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credits in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field may substitute for one year of the experience described.

Independently coordinates and performs various field activities for several project areas or counties within a region or projects within a statewide program area. Collect fish for identification, abundance, size and quality. Coordinates and summarizes data collected from various sample collections/surveys. Supervises routine fish sampling activities. Supervises the construction and repair of habitat structures. Prepares and delivers fishing education programs. Posts public fishing rights and other fisheries signage. Maintains, repairs, and procures equipment, and performs intermediate GIS tasks. Supervises Fish and Wildlife Technician 1, interns and volunteers.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program.
• Substitution: one year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the experience described.

Additional Comments

This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

• Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
• Transportation needs of this position require use of a state vehicle and adhering to the Department’s Vehicle Policy. You must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for this position.
• Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
• Must be able to work in remote areas.
• Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Travel may be required.
• Overnight travel may be required.
• Weekends and holidays may be required.
• Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
