Job summary

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. is seeking firmware engineers to develop hard real-time software for critical power applications.

A typical day includes designing, implementing, and testing software that interfaces with hardware and external assets, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable products. The role emphasizes documentation, code reviews, and continuous process improvement.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of experience in backend/frontend languages and related tools.
  • Proficient with C++, C, Python, C#, React, Postgres, Git, GitHub.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps).
  • Knowledge of Ethernet networking and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm).
  • Familiar with secure software development lifecycle and agile processes.
  • Strong writing, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Debugging with gdb or equivalent, and familiarity with BDD (Gherkin/Behave).
  • Ability to work independently and in teams and to mentor others.

Responsibilities

As a Firmware Engineer, a typical day might include the following:
  • Participate in the design, implementation, and testing of software systems
  • Understand software interactions with external hardware and software assets
  • Collaborate with the development team, subject-matter experts, and other stakeholders to achieve solutions
  • Author and maintain specification, design, and testing documentation
  • Actively participate in code reviews
  • Update, design, automate, and test processes
  • Develop knowledge of SEL engineering processes
  • Develop knowledge of SEL products and technology
  • Mentor and train interns and Associate Engineers
This job might be for you if:
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in most of the following areas:
    • Backend programming languages (C++, C, Python, C#, or equivalent)
    • Frontend technologies (React)
    • Relational databases (Postgres or equivalent)
    • Source control technologies (Git, Bitbucket, GitHub)
    • CI/CD pipeline technologies (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps)
    • Knowledge of Ethernet Communication and networking
    • Containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, etc.)
    • Secure software development lifecycle
    • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
    • Debugging (gdb or equivalent)
    • Familiarity with Behavior-Driven Development (Gherkin/Behave)
    • Agile development principles, processes, and tools
    • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team environment
    • Drive for self-improvement
  • It would be nice if you had:
    • Basic knowledge of power systems
    • Knowledge of one or more of the following areas: Industrial Controls Process Automation Application Engineering Frontend programming languages (JavaScript and TypeScript)

Pay Range Data
  • Associate Software Engineer: $84,200 - $124,500 per year
  • Software Engineer: $97,700 - $144,400 per year
  • Lead Software Engineer: $115,300 - $170,400 per year.
