Senior Firmware and Robotics Software Engineer
Background
Agency Robotics is pioneering the future of logistics by developing advanced robotic systems that optimize the movement of goods and make supply chains more human-friendly.
Founded by veterans of Boston’s leading robotics companies (Amazon Robotics, Motional, and 6 River Systems), we combine deep customer insight with cutting-edge mechatronics, intelligent software, and scalable hardware to transform warehouse operations. We’re passionate about simplifying complex processes through elegant automation—and putting agency back in the hands of the operator.
We’re seeking a Firmware and Robotics Software Engineer to own everything that runs on our autonomous warehouse robots: the embedded firmware driving motors and hardware, the onboard software supervising the robot, and parts of our vision system. This is a hands‑on role on a small team. You will ship code to robots in the field, build new products from scratch, debug across platforms, and work closely with hardware and software teams.
Responsibilities
As a Firmware and Robotics Software Engineer, you will:
- Own, maintain, and extend the embedded firmware on our robot’s main controller and the onboard software on its Linux computer
- Build firmware and onboard software from scratch for new products as our product line expands
- Contribute to our camera and vision software
- Develop and tune motor control, motion, and safety behavior on real hardware, working with the hardware team through board bring-up and new revisions
- Own the release process, including versioning, release notes, and over-the-air updates across the fleet
- Keep one codebase compatible across the hardware revisions running in the field
- Diagnose field issues from logs and telemetry and drive them to root cause
- Write tests and documentation, and keep code quality high through code review
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related engineering field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of professional experience in embedded systems or robotics software, including 3+ years of bare-metal firmware development
- Strong experience programming and configuring microcontrollers (for example, the STM32 family), including peripherals, interrupts, DMA, and bootloaders
- Hands‑on experience with common embedded communication protocols such as UART/RS-232, I2C, SPI, and CAN
- Proficiency in C for embedded systems and Python for onboard software and tooling, with a track record of taking new firmware or software from initial design to production
- Experience with embedded Linux on single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi
- Experience with motor control and control loops on real machines
- Robotics experience integrating sensors, actuators, and supervisory software
- Experience with release management and supporting products across revisions
- Comfort in a lab setting with debuggers, oscilloscopes, and schematics
- Demonstrated experience developing software with AI coding assistants, and the judgment to review and verify what they produce
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to document and present complex technical concepts
- Highly self‑motivated and thrives in fast-paced, cross‑functional startup environments
- Ability to work in-person at our Woburn office, with occasional travel to customer sites
Nice to Have
- Background in warehouse automation, material handling, or mobile robots
- Hands‑on work with PLCs and industrial controllers
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus or other fieldbuses
- Exposure to safety systems and robot safety standards
- Experience with battery management and charging systems
- Knowledge of depth cameras or 3D vision
- Experience with fleet deployment, remote diagnostics, or containerized software
- Knowledge of PCB design and hardware bring‑up
What We Offer
- A culture built on employee agency – real ownership, real impact
- End-to-end ownership of the software that runs on every robot we ship
- The ability to ship quickly and see your work deployed in the field
- Close collaboration with a high-caliber team who have shipped real systems at scale
- Competitive salary and meaningful startup equity
- Generous PTO, plus medical, dental, and vision coverage
