Job summary

Polk County BoCC is offering a Firefighter Trainee 40 PRTP through Polk County Fire Rescue. The role provides paid, full-time training aimed at obtaining State of Florida Firefighter and EMT certifications.

Trainees engage in structured coursework, field experiences, and fitness activities, progressing toward Firefighter-EMT roles. The program runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with an hourly rate of $16.40.

Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age.
• Graduate of an accredited high school or equivalent.
• Must be a Polk County resident for two years prior to application and maintain residency.
• Valid State of Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Passes background check, fingerprinting, drug screening, medical and psychiatric evaluations.
• Physically capable of performing essential firefighting and EMS training duties.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Meets HUD low-income guidelines (≤50% AMI).
• Does not currently hold Florida Firefighter or EMT certification.

Responsibilities

• Participates in full-time structured training in firefighting, rescue operations, and EMS.
• Attends classroom instruction and hands-on field training to build discipline and teamwork.
• Trains in fire behavior, suppression, patient care, and rescue procedures.
• Assists with equipment maintenance, readiness, and inspections.
• Represents the program at community outreach and recruitment events.
