Job description

The Augusta Fire Department provides full-time firefighting, Paramedic-level Emergency Medical Services, and public education to Maine's capital and surrounding communities.

Are you an experienced Firefighter/Paramedic or Firefighter/AEMT driven by a commitment to public safety and emergency response? Do you thrive under pressure and take pride in being there when your community needs you most? If so, we want you on our team.

The City of Augusta is seeking a dedicated Firefighter/Paramedic to provide both basic and advanced life support for the sick and injured. In this vital role, you will also help combat, extinguish, and prevent fires – protecting lives and property. Join a team that values service, courage, and excellence, and help us continue making Augusta a safer place for all. A complete job description is available below.

Requirements: Valid Maine EMS Paramedic license required. Candidates who currently hold an Advanced EMT (AEMT) license may be considered provided they are able and willing to obtain Paramedic level licensure as a condition of continued employment (training paid by employer). Firefighter I and/or Firefighter II certification and a valid State of Maine driver’s license required. All candidates must successfully complete the Augusta Fire Department’s hiring process, which includes a written exam, a physical agility test, and an oral interview.

Compensation and Benefits: Starting pay is currently $24.62 to $29.66 per hour for FF/AEMTs and $26.59 to $32.03 per hour for FF/Paramedics, depending on experience. Candidates may be credited with up to five (5) years prior experience for purposes of determining starting pay rate. Employees are eligible for annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), and for step increases as outlined in the union contract.

The City of Augusta offers a choice between two excellent health insurance plans. Depending on the plan selected, a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) may be available to help offset deductible costs. Employees who are covered under a qualifying alternative health plan may be eligible for a medical buyout ranging from $3,000 to $3,600 annually, based on coverage eligibility. Retirement benefits include mandatory enrollment in the MainePERS Special Plan 3C, a 25-year No Age defined benefit pension plan. Please note that employees in this plan do not contribute to Social Security.

Additional benefits include generous paid time off, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability coverage, an optional 457(b) deferred compensation plan, tuition reimbursement, access to Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for medical and dependent care expenses, and more.
