Job description

FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC

Location: Westlake, LA

Pay: $31.26 Hourly

Job Summary:

Under supervision, the Airport Firefighter performs work in controlling and extinguishing fires; rescuing persons involved in aircraft crash or fire, or by structural fire; preventing fire by reducing or eliminating potential fire hazards; responding to and providing assistance for medical aid calls, vehicle accidents, and Hazmat incidents. This position applies to both EMT-Basic or Paramedic.

Essential Duties and Functions:

  • Perform firefighting and rescue operations as mandated by Federal Aviation Regulations Part 139, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF); and be familiar with the aircraft types assigned to the specific airport.

  • Respond to calls for assistance; monitor, receive, record, and disseminate information during routine or emergency situations; maintain daily logs and prepare other required reports.

  • Fight, control, and extinguish aircraft, structural, natural cover, and miscellaneous fires including the performance of rescue operations.

  • Drive and operate aircraft crash rescue and structural firefighting apparatus.

  • Perform hose lays, ladder and pump operations, salvage, and overhaul operations.

  • Respond to fuel spills, hazardous material incidents, and conduct standby operations.

  • Assist in the fuel operations inspection process.

  • Ensure vehicles and equipment is operational for emergency response.

  • Be responsive to airport security and other emergencies and situations that may involve loss of human life or property; emergencies may include operations, police, fire and emergency medical services.

  • Utilize Incident Management System (ICS)/National Incident Management System (NIMS) protocols and procedures; coordinate and/or participate in after-action emergency de-briefing with appropriate departments and stakeholders.

  • Protect life, property, and provide public safety within departmental policies and guidelines.

  • Perform fire prevention duties:

  • Perform building inspections.

  • Test fire hydrants and fire protection systems.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain fire prevention programs.

  • Maintain appropriate records.

  • Respond to citizen calls for assistance in prevention and inspection matters.

  • Develop a working knowledge of airport rules and regulations.

  • Issue hot work and/or confined space permits.

  • Conduct extinguisher training for airport employees.

  • Develop evacuation plans for customer owned and occupied buildings.

  • Inspect and maintain portable fire extinguishers.

  • Maintain station facilities.

  • Maintain a positive, high profile within the airport community.

  • Engage in public relations activities, conduct tours.

  • Complete all required company, firefighter and sit-specific training requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years of age

  • US Citizen with GED or High School Diploma

  • Valid drivers' license and driving history acceptable to the customer

  • Ability to pass pre-employment Firefighter/DOT physical, Drug Screen, and Physical Ability Test (PAT)

  • Ability to pass U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) fingerprint and background investigations.

  • Ability to obtain driver qualifications on all apparatus within one (1) year of appointment

  • Minimum one (1) years full time firefighting experience or two years of volunteer firefighting experience

  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 or ability to obtain within 30 days of appointment

  • Current AHA CPR (Professional Rescuer Level)

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  • IFSAC or NPQS Firefighter I/II

  • IFSAC or NPQS Haz Mat Operations

  • IFSAC or NPQS Airport Firefighter

  • Must possess State EMR, EMT-B, EMT-A or Paramedic certification (dependent on contractual obligations)

  • Meet and maintain the ability to drive airport vehicles and obtain authorization to access the Non-Movement Area and Movement Area on the Air Operations Area (AOA), including aircraft crash/rescue and structural firefighting apparatus.

  • As an employee, you are deemed to be essential personnel as part of the airport's emergency response, and must respond to airport incidents, as requested/required.

  • COMPUTER SKILLS: Advanced computer software application (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and Internet navigational skills. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.

  • The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

The work is generally shift work consisting of 24 hours on duty, depending on the assignment.

Work Environment:

Works inside and outside, exposed to adverse weather conditions; exposed to fire and chemicals, intense heat, toxic gases and dense smoke, extreme heights and confined spaces; subject to recall; subject to mandatory overtime; working shifts and hours may vary due to mission objectives and budgetary constraints.
