Job description

Job Description: Firefighter/Paramedic

The primary purpose of this classification is to ensure the safety of individuals and property through firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS), often in physically demanding conditions. Firefighters participate in supervised drills and training to enhance their skills, maintain equipment and facilities, and engage in public education on fire safety.

Firefighters typically operate within the fire station and at fire scenes under supervision, following established procedures. They may temporarily assume higher-ranking responsibilities and are often assigned additional duties based on departmental needs. They work under the supervision of a Lieutenant and are equipped with paramedic-level EMS licensure to provide immediate medical assistance. Firefighter/Paramedics frequently operate on ALS transporting ambulances and are assigned to medic units.

This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act, subject to overtime regulations.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Maintaining fire district records and preparing reports; operating fire district apparatus.
  2. Assisting with equipment maintenance.
  3. Responding to fire and emergency calls with the assigned company.
  4. Serving as an instructor in specialized training courses as directed.
  5. Participating in conferences and training to stay current in fire prevention and EMS.
  6. Ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of station, apparatus, and tools.
  7. Assisting in building inspections and public fire prevention education.
  8. Assisting in budget preparation for station operations.
  9. Performing firefighting tasks such as laying hoses, climbing ladders, and using extinguishers.
  10. Conducting salvage operations.
  11. Administering emergency medical services, including operating on ALS ambulances.
  12. Participating in drills and continuing education.
  13. Performing general maintenance of district property.
  14. Conducting station tours for community groups.
  15. Operating radios and communication equipment.
  16. Striving to improve operations and customer service.
  17. Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Oregon State Paramedic License or NREMT Paramedic with an associate's degree or higher and reciprocity eligibility.
  • Class C Driver's License.
  • NFPA Firefighter I certification or higher.
  • Advanced cardiac life support certification.
  • Basic life support certification.
  • Hazmat Awareness certification.
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications.
