Job summary

The City of West University Place seeks a dedicated firefighter/paramedic to provide emergency support for fire and medical incidents. You will respond to calls, assist in rescuing, provide basic and advanced life support, and help maintain facilities and apparatus readiness.

Responsibilities include incident reporting, staff and public safety training, and participating in daily fire station operations. Applicants must meet licensing requirements and pass a background check and physical exam.

Qualifications

  • Firefighter certification is required for employment.
  • Paramedic certification is required for employment.
  • Background check, drug screen, and medical exam may be required.

Job description

Class Summary

Position is responsible for providing emergency support in the event of a fire or medical emergency. Typical duties may include: maintaining readiness for emergency call response; responding to fire, medical, and related emergency calls when dispatched and taking proper action; performing routine apparatus and facility maintenance; preparing incident reports; educating staff and public on fire safety/prevention; and/or, performing other related activities.

Typical Class Essential Duties
  • Responds to fire suppression, hazard mitigation, victim rescue, and medical emergencies; maintains readiness for emergency call response; extinguishes fires and performs related life and property protection; provides emergency medical care at a basic and advanced life support level.
  • Ensures the proper condition, maintenance, and appearance of apparatus and equipment; prepares apparatus for immediate response.
  • Prepares, maintains, and/or updates incident and other reports and documentation.
  • Participates in training drills, safety checks, and physical fitness activities and exercises; and participates in/facilitates fire department programs or training sessions to educate staff and public on fire safety/prevention.
  • Participates in the daily functions of the fire station, which may include: housekeeping, cooking, and/or performing other related duties.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions, such as, mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibrations; atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation; hazardous materials, such as chemicals, blood, and other bodily fluids; extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; work space-related movement restrictions; intense noise; and other environmental conditions, such as, challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environments; incumbents may also be expected to travel.
