Job summary

City of Oakland Park in Florida is seeking a dedicated firefighter to perform general duty firefighting, rescue, and medical emergency care. You will drive and operate fire apparatus, assist in fire prevention inspections, and participate in training and drills to protect lives and property.

Candidates must hold Florida Firefighter and Paramedic certifications, a valid Florida Driver's license, and complete CPAT/EVOC as required. Broward County residency is preferred.

Job description

POSITION:

This employee provides general duty firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and operating firefighting apparatus. An employee in this class is responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities; rescue operations; fire prevention inspections and administration of emergency medical care in emergency situations. An employee in this class may be required to perform duties under hazardous conditions, which involve extreme exertion, smoke and cramped surroundings. Work may involve assignment as a driver of firefighting vehicles or rescue vehicles, and the operation of afirefightingandmedical equipment. Work also involves inspectionandmaintenance of apparatus, equipment and facilities quarters and participation in supervised training and drills. Provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured utilizing the skills, training and knowledge required of a certified Paramedic. Work is performed under the supervision of the Company Officer and the Battalion Chief and under the medical direction of the City's Medical Director. Employee(s) will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job-related duties requested by any person authorized to give instructions or assignments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Responds to a wide variety of emergency alarms with assigned company. Lays and connects hoses, holds nozzle and directs fire streams; raises ladders; operates fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other firefighting equipment.
  • Enters premises for firefighting, rescue and salvage operations. Drives fire apparatus and rescue vehicles, operates pumps, aerial ladders and auxiliary fire rescue equipment. Performs salvage operations by deploying salvage covers, removing water and clearing debris. Performs fire prevention inspections. Participates in fire rescue training drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical care and related subjects. Attends public gatherings as assigned to ensure observance of fire safety regulations and requirements. Performs general maintenance and minor repairs to fire department property, apparatus and quarters. Provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured utilizing the skills, training and knowledge required of a certified Paramedic. Generates and/or completes various records, reports, and checklists including medical records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from a standard high school or its equivalent.
  • Holds a valid State of Florida Firefighter Certificate (must be certified at the time of application submission).
  • Possess a valid State of Florida Paramedic Certification.
  • Valid State of Florida Class "E" Driver’s License at the time of application
  • Possess all valid certifications necessary to perform as a Paramedic within the City of Oakland Park which includes certification or successful completion of:
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers (PEPP)
  • Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC)
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test card/certification (issued within 12 months of the date of job posting)
  • The City will waive physical ability test certification from candidates currently employed as a State of Florida Firefighter and State of Florida Paramedic.
  • The City will consider the acceptance of a physical ability test certification from any State of Florida certified firefighter training center within one year of the date of application for employment known as: Candidate Physical Ability Test – CPAT or Physical Ability Test – PAT.

NOTE:
  • All candidates must meet physical requirements of National Fire Protection Standard 1582, Standards on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Department.
  • Must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application (FL Statutes, Section 633.34(6)).
