Job summary

The City of North Myrtle Beach is seeking a Firefighter/EMT under general supervision to respond to fires and emergencies, control and extinguish fires, protect lives and property, and maintain firefighting equipment.

The position includes conducting fire inspections and pre-fire planning, performing minor vehicle and equipment maintenance, and responding to emergency medical calls as an EMT. It requires meeting the listed certifications and being physically capable of demanding fireground tasks.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• NFPA 1001 Firefighter II certification required.
• EMT certification (National Registry and SCDHEC) required.
• SC Class E or NC Class B driver license as applicable by residency.
• Able to pass NFPA 1582 Physical.

Job description

Under general supervision, controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property, and maintains all fire equipment. Receives and responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls performing the necessary functions and operations to efficiently handle any fireground situation. Performs fire inspections and pre-fire planning, minor vehicle and equipment maintenance, and other related tasks. Responds to emergency situations requiring emergency medical attention and performs duties of an EMT.

High school diploma or GED

Certifications

• Minimum age 18
• Obtain and maintain NFPA 1001, Firefighter II
• Obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Technician, National Registry and SCDHEC
• South Carolina Class E Drivers License or North Carolina Class B Drivers License for those residing within residency requirements with a NC address
• Able to pass NFPA 1582 Physical

Preferred

• One (1) year of fire suppression experience preferred

Note

• The City retains the right to determine equivalencies.
• Any certifications not possessed at hire, must be obtained before the employee is removed from probation in order to continue employment with the City.

Must be physically able to operate a ladder truck, automobile, fire apparatus, extrication equipment, various fire, medical, and rescue equipment. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or up twenty pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Medium work must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to one hundred pounds.
