Job Summary

The Fire Safety Officer II - Paramedic protects life and property by providing Fire & Emergency Medical Services response including, but not limited to fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials, technical rescue, fire and injury prevention and educational programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Duties
  • 15% - Supervisory: Work is performed under the direction of a commanding officer but the individual must take initiative and exercise independent judgment in emergency situations. This position has no supervisory responsibilities, however may require giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or members of the public during emergency operations per NIMS-ICS as a resource leader or team member; May serve as Initial Incident Commander until relieved as required.
  • 35% - Administrative: Actively conducts occupancy pre-incident plans, performs fire prevention, public education, and public relations activities while projecting a professional public image. Completes electronic forms, incident reports, and other documentation in an accurate and timely manner, as required. Maintains compliance with required OSHA Programs to include Fire Brigade Clearance, Respiratory Protection, Exposure Control Program. Maintains EMS certification and maintains medical control sponsorship/authorization.
  • 50% - Responsible for responding to scenes of fires, disasters or other emergency incidents; protecting life and property through controlling, extinguishing and preventing fires; provides emergency medical services; responds to manmade and natural disasters. In emergency situations, performs hazardous tasks requiring strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time. Delivers safe medical care and treatment based on the individual needs of the patient and in accordance with medical protocols and department policies and procedures. This position will be required to work special event standby for fire and EMS operations.
Minimum Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED and experience in fire-fighting equipment maintenance, fire prevention or fire fighting.
  • 1+ year of field experience firefighting and/or EMS services at the EMT Basic level or higher
  • Current National Registry EMT Basic certification with the ability to obtain Paramedic; NFPA, IFSAC, or Proboard FFI and FFII; NIMS-ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800; SC Drivers License Class B or E; CPR-BLS. Successful completion of National Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Responder Training program within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Requirements
  • AA, AS, or AAS in Fire Science, Emergency Services, or other related field
  • 2+ years of full time paid Firefighter II and Advanced EMT or Paramedic experience.
  • Current NREMT & SC EMT Paramedic certification. Emergency Vehicle Driver/Operator (SCFA 1210 or equivalent); Firefighter Survival/Mayday (SCFA 1139 or equivalent); Rapid Intervention Team (RIT - SCFA 1140 or equivalent); Support Company Operations (SCFA 1161 or equivalent); Technical Rescue Awareness; Technical Rescue Operations (or equivalent).
