Brookhaven National Laboratory's Fire Rescue Group is seeking a Firefighter/EMT to protect people, equipment, and facilities. You will respond to fires, perform rescues, provide EMS, and maintain firefighting equipment, while coordinating with medical and safety teams.

The role requires NYS EMT-B certification, Firefighter I, HazMat, and a Class A pump operator license, plus the ability to work 24-hour shifts following a 12–15 week training period.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years progressive experience in a fire department.
  • Current NYS EMT-B with at least three years continuous certification.
  • Certification as a motor pump operator on a Class A pumper in NY, Suffolk, or Nassau counties.
  • Firefighter I Certification and HazMat Technician certification.
  • Confined Space Rescue certification or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Fire suppression in buildings, vehicles and wildlands; operate hoses, pumps and ladders.
  • Rescue operations including RIT and confined spaces.
  • Inspect and test fire protection systems and equipment; educate on fire safety.
  • Maintain and test fire extinguishers and hydrants; conduct drills and training.
  • Emergency medical response with BLS, CPR, and transport coordination.
  • Respond to hazardous materials incidents and participate in incident command tasks.

Organizational OverviewThe Brookhaven National Laboratory Fire Rescue Group is part of the Laboratory Protection Division within the Facilities & Operations Directorate. This group was formed in 1947 from the former Army Base staff, the BNL Fire Rescue Group is a full time, career Department. The mission of the Fire Rescue Group is to provide Brookhaven National Laboratory with fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, confined space rescue, technical rescue, salvage, and damage control. BNL Fire Rescue Group provides emergency medical services to employees, guests and visitors.Position DescriptionBNL Fire Rescue is seeking a Firefighter/EMT to join their team. This individual will take the proper action to ensure the safety and protection of people, equipment and property. The individual must be skilled in firematic procedures, the use of emergency equipment and the application of emergency medical assistance. May be required to perform such duties off site. Performs assigned duties in fire protection work, reports and tests. Maintains, services and operates a variety of tools and equipment connected with fire prevention, fire, rescue, and emergency medical assistance. May be assigned special and routine training assignments and drills. Such assignments when pertaining to medical assistance will not exceed the standards of the New York State Emergency Medical Technician.This person will report to a Fire Captain. The initial training shift will be from Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30pm. After successful completion of the probationary period (approximately 12 to 15 weeks), the candidate will transition to a 24 hours on /48 hours off rotating shift schedule.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Fire SuppressionRespond to fires in buildings, vehicles and wildlands.Operate hoses, pumps, ladders and fire apparatus.Conduct search and rescue operation in burning or smoke-filled buildings.Rescue Operations:Rescue trapped victims from vehicles, buildings, or other hazardous situations.Rescue trapped, injured, or lost firefighters as part of a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT).Provide confined space rescue support for on-site-entries.Fire Prevention and Inspection:Inspect buildings for fire hazards and code compliance.Inspection and testing of fire protection systems, standpipes, fixed protection systems, fire doors, fire extinguishers and fire hydrants.Educate the public on fire safety and prevention.Maintenance and trainingMaintain fire equipment, vehicles, and the firehouse.Conduct fire extinguisher training for Laboratory employees and guests.Participate in drills, physical fitness training and continuing education.Conduct maintenance and hydrostatic testing of fire extinguishers.EMT DutiesEmergency Medical Response:Respond to medical emergencies like heart attacks, trauma and medical, etc.Provide basic life support (BLS), including CPR, bleeding control, oxygen administration 12 lead EKG and BLS drugs.Patient Assessment and Care:Assess patient’s conditions and gather vital signs.Stabilize patients and prepare them for transport.TransportSafely transport patients in ambulances to hospitals.Communicate with hospital staff during transfer of patient.Medical DocumentationsAccurately document patient care, vital and treatment provided.Additional DutiesRespond to hazardous material incidents, natural disasters, and other emergencies.Respond as a member of the Rescue Task Force Team.Collaborate with law enforcement and other emergency services.Support community outreach programs and public events.Monitor the site Fire Alarm system.Track fire protection daily impairments.The above list of duties is not all inclusive of every duty performed by this position but does include the major elements in the job.Required knowledge, skills and abilities:A minimum of five years progressive experience in a volunteer or career fire department.Current New York State EMT-B with at least three years continuous certification.Certification as a motor pump operator on a Class A pumper through New York State, Suffolk or Nassau Counties required.Firefighter I Certification.New York State Certified Hazardous Materials Technician or equivalent based on curriculum.New York State Certified in Confined Space Rescue or equivalent based on curriculum.Able to work 24-hour shifts and holidays at the completion of a 15-week training period.Possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities:Firefighter 2 Certification.Fire Inspector 1 certification.Trench Rescue Technician.High Angle Rescue.Rapid Intervention Team Training.Aerial or Ladder Operations.NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800.Experience serving as a line officer and progressive experience in a volunteer or career fire department.Possession of an associate degree or higher in fire protection technology or related field is also desirable.NYS Paramedic Certification.Environment, Safety & Health Requirements:Must meet medical requirements of the BNL’s Job Medical Assessment Form, including but not limited to:The ability to successfully complete and pass an extensive medical physical, stress, and functional capacity tests.Other InformationThe successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.The Lab’s placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position.
