Job summary

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a Staff Engineer (Process Improvement Specialist) to drive Lean Six Sigma initiatives and continuous improvement across the organization. You will lead improvement teams, map current and future states, and apply DMAIC tools to deliver efficient processes that enhance customer satisfaction.

The role requires a Bachelor's in engineering, 3+ years in quality or process improvement, and strong facilitation and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field
  • Minimum three (3) years progressively responsible related work experience in Quality Assurance, Quality Control, process improvement, continuous improvement, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated competency in process mapping
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to facilitate teams with diverse skills and talents during all phases of process improvement projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of Lean Six Sigma, DMAIC, or comparable continuous/process improvement methodologies

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate teams and engage with staff to understand business processes and practices
  • Organize and facilitate team meetings, set targeted agendas, and manage team feedback
  • Using Lean Six Sigma (DMAIC) tools to develop solutions to improve, optimize, or redesign processes
  • Facilitate improvements to business processes and tools to deliver efficiencies and customer satisfaction
  • Develop current state process maps in MS Visio for review and analysis
  • Develop future state process maps in MS Visio that incorporate process efficiencies based on customer needs
  • Manage the lifecycle of an improvement project using key metrics to monitor performance and maintain system control
  • Work with business units to manage change, document workflow, and process changes and develop standard operating procedures
  • Demonstrated commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence

Position Description

The Quality Management Office (QMO) works with line organizations on developing and delivering programs, activities, and services that integrate quality assurance, environmental, and safety management principles throughout the Laboratory. QMO assists line organizations and Management System Stewards/Executives in planning and executing assessment activities, manages the Integrated Assessment Plan for the institution as well as the Laboratory’s Independent Oversight function, and trains and qualifies BNL staff to conduct self-assessments. The Quality Management Office has an opening for a Staff Engineer (Process Improvement Specialist) to identify and drive process improvements consistent with Lean Six Sigma methodologies. This position will serve as a central resource for line organizations to pursue continuous improvement of business processes, improve efficiency and customer/user satisfaction, and integrate the principles of Human Organizational Performance (HOP) into work.

Core Services that the Process Improvement Specialist will help deliver to the Laboratory include:
  • Leading Lean/Six Sigma improvement teams
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement and savings
  • Organizing and facilitating improvement projects/teams, and applying the proven methods and tools of continuous improvement to deliver cost effective and efficient processes
  • Developing skill sets for process improvement, and leveraging continuous improvement resources across the institution
  • Measuring progress, reporting results, and celebrating success
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or closely related field of study

  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Yellow Belt or higher)
  • Project Management Certification or training
  • Familiarity with Quality Management processes
  • Familiarity with BNL business and administrative processes
  • Familiar with Microsoft Visio
  • Familiar with MS PowerBI applications for business data management
Other Information

This position is eligible for consideration of a flexible work arrangement (hybrid 4 days, on-site 1 day/work-from-home).

Occasional domestic travel (5%).

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $101000 - $120000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
