Job summary

The City of Hayward is seeking a Lateral Firefighter to join the Hayward Fire Department. The role requires completion of the Firefighter Trainee Academy and a probationary period.

You will respond to emergencies, lay lines, rescue, and provide paramedic care per Alameda County protocols and Base Hospital guidance. Responsibilities include driving an ambulance when required, maintaining equipment, and participating in inspections and prevention activities.

Qualifications

• Successfully complete Hayward Fire Department’s Firefighter Trainee Academy.
• Currently employed as a Firefighter with 1 year full-time experience or 2 years seasonal experience.
• Possession of and ability to maintain required paramedic and life support certifications.

Responsibilities

• Respond to alarms and lay lines of hose; direct streams of water and other extinguishers.
• Carry and set up ladders; ventilate buildings and rescue persons/animals.
• Provide medical aid using paramedic techniques and administer medications; monitor vital signs.
• May drive department ambulance and transport patients to facilities.
• Maintain and inspect fire station offices, vehicles, and equipment.
