Job summary

The City of Tybee Island is accepting applications for a full-time Firefighter. This position protects lives and property by responding to fires, emergency medical incidents, rescues, hazardous-material incidents, water-rescue incidents, and other emergencies.

Starting pay ranges from $21.03 to $22.22 per hour, about $62,880 to $66,438 annually. Work schedule is 48 hours on/96 hours off with a flexible shift-swap policy, and the application deadline is October 9, 2026.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• NPQ Firefighter I certification.
• NPQ Hazardous Materials Operations-level certification.
• CPR certification.
• NIMS 100 and NIMS 700 completed.

Responsibilities

• Responds to fire, medical, rescue, hazardous-material, and water-rescue emergencies.
• Operates fire apparatus, pumps, hoses, ladders, rescue tools, and emergency equipment.
• Performs fire suppression, rescue, ventilation, and property-conservation activities.
• Provides emergency medical care within the employee’s certification level.
• Performs assigned water-rescue and beach-patrol duties.
• Inspects and maintains apparatus, equipment, tools, protective gear, and station facilities.
• Participates in required training, community outreach, and other departmental activities.
• Completes reports and communicates effectively by radio, verbally, and in writing.

• Provides emergency medical care within the employee’s certification level.
• Performs assigned water-rescue and beach-patrol duties.
• Inspects and maintains apparatus, equipment, tools, protective gear, and station facilities.
• Participates in required training, community outreach, and other departmental activities.
• Completes reports and communicates effectively by radio, verbally, and in writing.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• NPQ Firefighter I certification.
• NPQ Hazardous Materials Operations-level certification.
• Valid CPR certification.
• Successful completion of NIMS 100 and NIMS 700.

The following qualifications are preferred at hire and must be obtained or completed during the 12-month probationary period if not already held:

• NPQ Firefighter II certification.
• Georgia EMT certification or license.
• Valid Georgia Class F driver’s license.
• NIMS 200 and NIMS 800.
• American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
• National Traffic Incident Management training.
• City in-house driver training.

Applicants must be able to perform strenuous physical work while wearing protective equipment and operate effectively in hazardous, stressful, and rapidly changing conditions. Firefighters must also meet applicable requirements of the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.

Physical Agility Testing

Candidates selected to continue in the hiring process must successfully complete a swimming assessment and a fire-related physical agility assessment. Testing is scheduled for October 12–15, 2026.
