Summit City Steel is seeking a dependable Fire Watch to support hot work on industrial and construction job sites. Training is provided on site, so no prior experience is required. You must stay alert, be safety-minded, and ready to travel to different sites as needed.

The role includes monitoring welding activities, setting up protective gear, and ensuring safe work conditions. Typical schedule is about 40 hours per week with overtime and potential overnight stays.

Qualifications

• 18 years or older
• Valid driver’s license
• Able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check
• Willing to travel to out-of-town job sites (overnight stays possible)
• Comfortable working at heights, outdoors, and in loud industrial environments
• Able to stand/walk for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs
• OSHA 10 is a plus — not required, training provided

Responsibilities

• Monitor welding, cutting, and grinding operations for sparks and smoldering material
• Set and reposition welding blankets and fire blankets to protect people and equipment
• Inspect the work area before hot work begins and verify combustibles are removed or protected
• Remain at the post for the full duration of hot work and after completion as required
• Keep a charged fire extinguisher within reach and know how to use it
• Sound the alarm and notify the foreman if a fire starts or conditions are unsafe
• Complete hot work permits and fire watch logs as required by the site
• Housekeeping and material handling tasks as assigned by the foreman or superintendent

About the Role

We're looking for a dependable Fire Watch to support hot work on industrial and construction job sites. No prior experience required — we train on site. If you show up on time, pay attention, and take safety seriously, we'll teach you the rest.

Fire Watch Duties

• Monitor welding, cutting, and grinding operations for sparks, slag, and smoldering material
• Set, move, and reposition welding blankets, fire blankets, and arc flash screens/shields to protect materials, equipment, and nearby personnel
• Inspect the work area before hot work begins; verify combustibles are removed or protected
• Stay at the post for the full duration of hot work and remain a minimum of 30 minutes after work stops (longer when the site or customer requires it)
• Keep a charged fire extinguisher within reach and know how to use it
• Sound the alarm and notify the foreman immediately if a fire starts or conditions become unsafe
• Complete hot work permits and fire watch logs as required by the site

General Labor Duties

• Housekeeping: sweeping, debris removal, keeping walkways and work areas clear
• Move and manage extension cords, welding leads, hoses, and air lines
• Stock and deliver welding rod, gas bottles, and other consumables to welders and ironworkers
• Help crews handle and stage materials, tools, and equipment
• Load and unload trucks; assist with site setup and cleanup
• Other tasks as assigned by the foreman or superintendent

Requirements

• 18 years or older
• Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
• Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
• Willing to travel to out-of-town job sites (overnight stays at times)
• Comfortable working at heights, outdoors, and in loud industrial environments
• Able to stand or walk for long stretches, climb ladders and stairs, and lift up to 50 lbs
• OSHA 10 a plus — not required, we can get you certified

Schedule & Pay

• Roughly 40 hours a week, with overtime, extended days, and occasional weekends depending on the project
• Shutdowns and outages may involve night shifts or longer hours
• $15–17/hour based on experience and reliability
• Travel pay / per diem for overnight work
