Job summary

Summit City Steel Erection is seeking a dependable Fire Watch to support hot work on industrial and construction job sites. Training provided on site; punctuality and safety are essential, with on-site instruction to follow.

You will monitor welding operations, reposition safety blankets and screens, inspect sites, and maintain a safe work area. Willingness to travel and pass pre-employment checks are required.

Qualifications

• 18 years or older
• Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
• Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
• Willing to travel to out-of-town job sites (overnight stays at times)
• Comfortable working at heights, outdoors, and in loud industrial environments
• Able to stand or walk for long stretches, climb ladders and stairs, and lift up to 50 lbs
• OSHA 10 a plus — not required, we can get you certified

Responsibilities

• Fire Watch duties: monitor welding, cutting, and grinding for sparks, slag and smoldering material
• Position blankets and screens to protect materials, equipment, and people
• Inspect work area before hot work and ensure combustibles are removed or protected
• Remain at post for full duration and 30+ minutes after work (as required)
• Keep a charged extinguisher ready and know how to use it
• Sound alarm and notify foreman if fire starts or unsafe conditions arise
• Complete hot work permits and logs as site requires
• General labor: housekeeping and debris removal; move cords, hoses, and lines
• Stock and deliver welding rod, gas bottles, and consumables to welders
• Assist crews with material handling, staging, and site setup/cleanup
• Load/unload trucks and support site operations

About the Role

We're looking for a dependable Fire Watch to support hot work on industrial and construction job sites. No prior experience required — we train on site. If you show up on time, pay attention, and take safety seriously, we'll teach you the rest.

Fire Watch Duties

• Monitor welding, cutting, and grinding operations for sparks, slag, and smoldering material
• Set, move, and reposition welding blankets, fire blankets, and arc flash screens/shields to protect materials, equipment, and nearby personnel
• Inspect the work area before hot work begins; verify combustibles are removed or protected
• Stay at the post for the full duration of hot work and remain a minimum of 30 minutes after work stops (longer when the site or customer requires it)
• Keep a charged fire extinguisher within reach and know how to use it
• Sound the alarm and notify the foreman immediately if a fire starts or conditions become unsafe
• Complete hot work permits and fire watch logs as required by the site

General Labor Duties

• Housekeeping: sweeping, debris removal, keeping walkways and work areas clear
• Move and manage extension cords, welding leads, hoses, and air lines
• Stock and deliver welding rod, gas bottles, and other consumables to welders and ironworkers
• Help crews handle and stage materials, tools, and equipment
• Load and unload trucks; assist with site setup and cleanup
• Other tasks as assigned by the foreman or superintendent

Schedule & Pay

• Roughly 40 hours a week, with overtime, extended days, and occasional weekends depending on the project
• Shutdowns and outages may involve night shifts or longer hours
• $15–17/hour based on experience and reliability
• Travel pay / per diem for overnight work
