Job summary

ABCO Peerless Sprinkler Corporation in Hicksville, NY is seeking an experienced Fire Sprinkler Designer to join our on-site team. You will create detailed water-based sprinkler designs that meet codes, project specs, and field requirements, collaborating with project managers, engineers, and AHJs.

This full-time role requires hands-on design work, hydraulic calculations, BIM integration, and the ability to coordinate with architectural and structural documents.

Qualifications

• Direct professional fire sprinkler design experience.
• NICET certification in Water-Based Systems Layout preferred.
• Strong knowledge of NFPA codes and NYC/NY codes.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed sprinkler layouts and hydraulic calculations.
• Review documents to determine system requirements and coordination.
• Use HydraCAD, AutoCAD, Revit; BIM coordination.
• Support permit and field installation processes.
• Mentor junior designers and manage multiple projects.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Fire Sprinkler Designer to join our established team in Hicksville, NY. In this full-time, on-site role, you will be responsible for creating detailed water-based fire sprinkler designs that comply with applicable codes, project specifications, and construction requirements. You will work on diverse, complex projects, producing accurate, constructible layouts while collaborating closely with project managers, field personnel, engineers, contractors, and local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).

Key Responsibilities

• Design & Calculations: Develop detailed sprinkler layouts, design drawings, hydraulic calculations, and material takeoffs/lists for commercial, industrial, and residential projects.


• Plan Review & Coordination: Review architectural, structural, and construction documents to determine system requirements, identify coordination challenges, and integrate designs with building mechanical systems.


• Software & BIM Integration: Utilize industry design tools (HydraCAD, AutoCAD, Revit) and participate in BIM/3D coordination activities as required.


• Project Execution & Support: Assist with permit/approval documentation, participate in design review meetings, update designs for field conditions/comments, and provide technical support during installation and inspections.


• Teamwork & Mentorship: Manage multiple assignments within fast-paced project schedules, evaluate constructability to support field teams, and offer technical guidance to developing design team members.

Qualifications & Skills

• Experience: Direct professional fire sprinkler system design experience; ability to independently perform layout and design work without entry-level training.


• Codes & Standards: Strong technical understanding of water-based fire protection systems, building construction, NFPA standards, and local NYC/NYS codes.


• Software Proficiency: Experience with HydraCAD, AutoCAD, Revit, or standard sprinkler design platforms. BIM/3D coordination experience is a strong advantage.


• Certifications & Education:


• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in engineering, drafting, or a related field preferred.


• NICET certification in Water-Based Systems Layout preferred (Level II is a strong match). Experienced designers without NICET will also be considered.


• Core Competencies: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; high attention to technical detail; ability to manage competing priorities under deadlines.
