Job summary

West Virginia is seeking a trainee Assistant Fire Marshal to learn protective services work in fire investigations and safety inspections through classroom, self-study, and fieldwork.

You will assist with inspections in schools, public and private health care facilities, and correctional facilities, travel across the state, and comply with certification requirements. A valid driver's license and willingness to work varied shifts are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
• Substitution: High school diploma or the equivalent and four (4) years of full-time or part-time equivalent paid or volunteer experience in law enforcement, fire prevention, fire safety, building inspection or safety related fields.
• Any combination of experience as described above and successful completion of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university may substitute for the above training at a rate of one (1) year for every thirty (30) semester hours.
• Special Requirement: All new hires after July 1, 2020 shall comply with the law enforcement certification requirements set forth in West Virginia Code §30-29-1et seq.

Responsibilities

• Learn protective services work in fire investigations and safety inspections.
• Assist with fire safety inspections or schools, public and private health care facilities, and correctional facilities.
• Assist with follow-up inspections and compliance with fire safety codes.
• Travel within an assigned geographic region of the State.
• Work in potentially hazardous conditions during inspections and investigations.

Bachelor’s degree

High school diploma + 4 years experience

Coursework substitution: 1 year per 30 semester hours
