Job description

Job Description: Fire Protection Engineer

The Fire Protection Engineer position is a technical role within the firm focused on project execution for various multi- and single-discipline facility design projects. The engineer will perform fire protection engineering services on projects of small to large scope for commercial and government facilities.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Performing all aspects of fire protection design services, including conceptual studies, programming, schematic, design development, and construction documents under supervision.
  2. Collaborating with multi-discipline design teams and meeting with clients to define project scope.
  3. Preparing marketing and presentation materials as directed.
  4. Resolving technical and coordination issues with guidance from senior staff.
  5. Supervising support staff and mentoring junior fire protection staff.
  6. Participating in bidding and construction phases, including field visits and review of shop drawings.
  7. Ensuring compliance with quality control practices.
  8. Working with project stakeholders and other disciplines to coordinate efforts.

Project responsibilities include:

  1. Serving as Senior Fire Protection Engineer or Design Manager as assigned.
  2. Preparing scope and fee proposals for projects.
  3. Conducting code analysis and selecting fire protection systems.
  4. Developing detailed drawings, specifications, and system components.
  5. Reviewing calculations, work products, and drawings produced by team members.
  6. Coordinating work with technical specifications and other disciplines.
  7. Responding to RFIs, QC comments, and submittals.
  8. Performing QA/QC reviews and adhering to project schedules and budgets.

Qualifications include:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; a postgraduate degree is preferred.
  2. Valid Fire Protection Engineer license in at least one US jurisdiction, with preference for local licensing.
  3. Experience in designing or leading fire protection projects across various sectors.
  4. Proficiency with relevant software and tools.

Additional skills and knowledge:

  1. Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP is desirable.
  2. Certifications like CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged.
  3. Active participation in professional organizations is a plus.
  4. Familiarity with fire protection analysis software.

Physical and workplace requirements:

Primarily sedentary office work with occasional site visits. Reasonable accommodations available for disabilities. The workplace schedule includes in-office days on Mondays and Thursdays, with a flexible third day.
