Qualifications

Role Description

This full-time, on-site Fire Protection Engineer role is based in San Diego, CA. The Fire Protection Engineer will perform design, analysis, and review of fire suppression and detection systems, including preparing drawings, specifications, and calculations in accordance with applicable codes and standards. Daily responsibilities include developing fire and life safety strategies, performing building and system code reviews, coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams, and supporting permitting and approval processes. The role also involves conducting site visits, assessing existing fire protection systems, preparing technical reports, and responding to client questions and contractor RFIs. The engineer will participate in project meetings, maintain accurate project documentation, and support quality control and continuous improvement within the firm.

Qualifications
  • Candidates should possess strong Fire Protection Engineering skills, including system design, code interpretation, and application of relevant standards (e.g., NFPA, IBC, IFC).
  • Candidates should possess Life Safety and Fire Safety expertise, including means of egress analysis, occupancy classification, and development of compliant fire and life safety strategies.
  • Candidates should possess Safety Engineering capabilities, focusing on risk assessment, performance-based design, and integration of safety considerations into building and system layouts.
  • Candidates should possess knowledge of Fire Suppression Systems, such as sprinklers, standpipes, fire pumps, special hazard systems, and related hydraulic calculations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related engineering discipline is preferred; EIT or PE licensure in fire protection (or progress toward licensure) is a plus.
  • Proficiency with design and documentation tools (e.g., AutoCAD or Revit), along with strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work on-site in San Diego, collaborate effectively with project teams and clients, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with building and fire code consulting, plan review, or coordination with AHJs in the Western US is beneficial.
