Job summary

The City of Wilmington, NC is seeking Fire Lieutenants to lead and supervise fire suppression and EMS activities, oversee training, and coordinate public relations. The lieutenant will ensure safety and accountability during emergencies and participate in departmental policy reviews.

Internal and external candidates must meet stringent certification and education requirements, including NIMS, Hazmat, EMT, and Fire Officer credentials.

Qualifications

• Internal candidates: Associate degree with 2 years as an Engineer in the Wilmington Fire Department or graduate with a WFD internal certificate with at least 3 years and 61 points on the Career Planning Report.
• External candidates: Associate degree and 6 years with a career fire department with 2 years as an acting company officer.
• Minimum requirements: Valid driver’s license; NCOSFM Certified Firefighter or IFSAC/Pro-Board Firefighter; EMT credential or National Registry EMT; Pro Board/IFSTA Hazmat Ops; NIMS IC 100, 200, 700; WFD Candidate School II; Pro Board/IFSTA Fire Officer 1.

Responsibilities

• Supervises personnel by prioritizing tasks, ensures completion, conducts performance evaluations, coordinates training, administers disciplinary actions; maintains personnel records.
• Commands fire ground operations during emergencies, directs subordinates in all aspects of fire suppression and control.
• Ensures safety and accountability of personnel and citizens during operations.
• Performs non-emergency operations and public relations, assists Fire and Life Safety, engages with the public.
• Performs administrative tasks: reports, committees, records, policy reviews, and other duties as assigned.
