The City of Murrieta is accepting applications for one (1) Full-Time Fire Inspector (currently not funded), with a tenure exceeding three (3) years from the date of hire. The position is funded by a defensible space clearing grant through the State of California. The eligibility list established may be used to fill similar positions within this classification for up to one (1) year.

DEFINITION

Under direction, inspects and reviews plans and specifications of industrial, commercial, and residential properties to determine compliance with fire prevention codes, regulations, and standards. Coordinates fire prevention activities, conducts public fire safety education programs, and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Fire Marshal or Deputy Fire Marshal. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the fully qualified journey-level classification performing fire inspection duties. Positions at this level perform the full range of duties independently, exercising judgment and initiative, with only occasional instruction for new or unusual situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Inspects buildings and facilities for fire hazards, fire protection equipment, and compliance with fire regulations, including vegetation management in open areas.
  • Ensures compliance with defensible space standards, especially in wildland urban interface zones.
  • Inspects new constructions and alterations for adherence to approved plans and fire safety standards.
  • Reviews development plans and technical reports during inspections for compliance with fire codes and standards.
  • Issues correction notices and citations; reports violations and conducts follow-up inspections.
  • Provides technical assistance and conducts fire prevention education and safety programs for fire personnel and the community.
  • Coordinates fire prevention programs with other departments and outside agencies; advises architects and developers on fire codes.
  • Investigates complaints related to fire prevention violations.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of inspections and investigations.
  • Develops public information materials and responds to incidents as needed.
  • Participates in professional meetings and stays updated on fire prevention trends and innovations.
  • Follows all safety rules and performs related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED), supplemented by college coursework in fire science or related fields. Two (2) years of inspection and enforcement experience in fire prevention is highly desirable.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D
  • Ability to obtain PC832 (A) certification within 12 months
  • Ability to obtain CA Fire Inspector I or ICC Fire Inspector I within 12 months

Highly desirable certifications include CSFM Fire Inspector 2A-D, ICC Fire Inspector II, and others listed.

Alternative Work Schedule: 4/10

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY

Knowledge of fire science, defensible space requirements, fire protection systems, hazard materials, and relevant laws. Ability to perform inspections, read plans, communicate effectively, prepare reports, and establish positive relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Must possess mobility for office and field work, including climbing ladders, inspecting sites, and lifting up to 40 pounds. Work environment includes office settings and outdoor fieldwork with exposure to various weather conditions and hazards.
